sb67
Having received a Scalescenes box fie layout for Christmas, LAST Christmas! I've finally made a start building it, I haven't given up on my latest layout I just had a spare couple of hours and thought I'd give it a go. I'm not sure how long this will take but I thought I'd start a thread as I'm bound to need some help along the way! So far I've just modified the file and stuck down a base track underlay.
DanielB
Good start, I've been building it myself and it's a really nice kit if you take your time. Are you building it pointless, or with the Y point?
sb67
Thanks Daniel, I was going to build it with a y point and maybe another boxfile with a sector plate fiddle yard. Been looking at ways of connecting them together.
Bungus the Fogeyman
Blimey Steve, you're knocking out layouts quicker than me! Disgusting of Market Harborough
DanielB
Regarding joining them together, have you considered case clasps? That's what I'm planning to use, mainly because they cost very little and there's a DIY shop near me that stocks them.

Disgusting of Market Harborough Don't think I'll ever reach your productivity levels Dave, not sure how long this will take as I'm enjoying the other layout. I started this when I had a bit of spare time and realised I'd had the boxfile a year and had done nothing with it. 12 hours ago, DanielB said: Regarding joining them together, have you considered case clasps? I'll look at them Daniel, I'm waiting for some bolts and wingnuts from e bay at the moment. which I was going to try.
4wDH
This looks like an interesting little build project.
Sturminster_Newton
" I was going to build it with a y point and maybe another boxfile with a sector plate fiddle yard." PECO locolift is the way forward here, they can be shortened to carry just a small shunter or used 'as is' for a small loco with an item or two of stock. Box files are just over 12-14.5" long the Locolift will just fit and needs no additional wiring. Cassette units are equally practical and the 'fiddle yard' just needs a shiny sealed surface for them to slide about on. Other than the challenge of construction why make things more difficult with a sector plate? As with all things in small scale modelling KISSED = Keep It Simple Silly or Expect Disaster.
sb67
Having not done too much on the boxfile I've had my interest re kindled. Track layed and made a cassette for the fiddle yard. I've made a hole in the opposite end so, at some time, I could have trains running straight through. All runs ok and next up is laying the 'concrete' in the yard. The base seems to have bowed slightly, I'll have to keep my eye on that!

Yep it is Kev, it was cut from sheet of copper clad. I had an idea to solder the power wires to it but as the layout's it's DC only I thought it will be easier to just keep the cassette wired. Thanks for explaining this Steve, I have seen the copper wire a few times on layouts and always wondered what it was for. I look forward to seeing your concrete work on the yard. sb67
Done the groundwork around the points, hasn't quite worked out how I wanted but never mind. I can get on with some other bits and go back to it later with some weathering powders etc.
Popular Post sb67
I've finished the lower level of buildings, I'm not rushing and it's proving to be a nice little layout to build. 17 2

RMweb Premium MAP66 Posted October 24, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 24, 2020 All of it is looking most excellent Steve. I particularly like the oily gunge and gunk in between and over the sleepers and the staining on the concrete which is very realistically represented - nice work 1
RMweb Gold Sweet pea Posted October 25, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 25, 2020 Steve this is turning out to be a lovely boxfile build, the oil and grime looks great. 2
sb67
Thanks guys, I got to say I'm really impressed with the kit, I'm wondering about using it in a small layout or giving the canal boxfile a go.
sb67
Got another bit done, it was a bit tricky as the base has bowed slightly and I struggled to get the walls to sit on the base. I've run out of glue now! I'm self isolating until the 7th so I'm a bit stuck! Unlike the bits that need glue on the model! 4 1

sb67
It's coming together nicely now. I've a minor problem though as my boxfile seems a tad too big and I ned to put some packing under the tall building on the left, not helped by the base bowing slightly! 6
sb67
Been slowly getting on with the boxfile. I've hit a couple of snags and had to be careful assembling it. My file is an odd size and the sides are no exactly square but I'm enjoying the challenge making it work. 5
