maico
I wondered how they would fare on google web search stats going back to 2004. The trend is a slow decline https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=Hornby model train Bachmann https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=Bachmann model trains&date=all Marklin clockwork xmas spikes https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F027yz7 Edited January 21, 2020 by maico 1

Being normalized it is impossible to compare magnitudes between Hornby and Bachmann. Bachmann's peak in December 2009 is interesting.

The trend is consistant whichever model railway company you put in. Also see the country comparisons for each marque. Steamport Southport
Hornby Train Set is interesting. Note the spikes which I assume is the Christmas demand. https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=Hornby train set&date=all A bit more noticeable here. Who says the Christmas train set market is extinct? https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today 5-y&q=Hornby train set Jason
RMweb Gold Mikkel Posted January 21, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 21, 2020 Interesting change in "model railway" vs "model railroad": https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=model railway, model railroad Incidentally I see both terms are in use in Canada (30/70%). 2
RMweb Premium Neal Ball Posted January 21, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 21, 2020 Hattons scores more searches than Hornby & Bachmann: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=hattons Or look at the search values for Hattons vs Rails: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=hattons,Rails of sheffield You can of course prove anything with statistics: anyone remember Jim Hacker and Sir Humphrey talking about Conscription? These days those in the know are probably more savvy about their searching.
RMweb Gold Richy59 Posted January 21, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 21, 2020 At least its and upward trend overall for OO Gauge. https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=oo gauge
RMweb Premium Neal Ball Posted January 21, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 21, 2020 I was always under the impression that interest in N gauge was lower than OO..... then add O into the mix: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=oo gauge,n gauge,o gauge Goes to show you can prove anything with statistics! 1

Hard to say exactly as you can’t chose the last 2 or 3 years. But the search volume for GMRC is fairly consistent for 2018 and 2019: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today 5-y&geo=GB&q=Great Model Railway Challenge,Fawley Hill,Kathy Millatt Edited January 21, 2020 by MrTea Added screen grabs
