DCC distortion

Hi

I have just bought a Heljan '0' gauge Mogul which I am very pleased with.

I run DCC and bought a Loksound 5L as I knew it would be a straightforward job to plug it in and connect a speaker. The speaker is 'Rail Exclusive' SP 40X20X7 big BOOMER which I had left over from a previous project. It is an 8 Ohm 1 watt model. I have used them before in other locos but with a Zimo decoder and they work well.

Unfortunately the sound is VERY distorted even when I turn down the volume. I'm not sure what the problem is but assume that the speaker can't handle the output from the decoder. I'm not really familiar with ESU decoders. I don't really want to change the decoder. Is there anyone who can advise me? If I do need a different speaker which should I use?

Thanks for your help.

Has the speaker been sealed correctly, as this new range of speakers are not always airtight or sealed.

I agree Richard, but I would have thought that it would not distort but be a feeble sound.

Perhaps it's simply that the sound file was recorded badly.  I'll contact the suppliers tomorrow and see what they say.

How are sounds like horns? One of my most disappointing sound conversions is a Class 17 with the Chinnor sounds. The horns etc. are fine, but the engine sounds are distorted. I have tried different speakers but have concluded that the issue is with the recording, not the speaker.

I'd have thought a Tannoy hifi speaker would need a lot more than 3w to drive it so thats probably not a great way to get the best out of it either

Richard

That's a misconception with hi fi. A good speaker will give plenty of sound at a low input.

3W should be more than enough and is likely to be more efficient than these tiddly dcc sound speakers.
