G-BOAF
Just looking at the box of my recently butchered Waterman Collection Earl Cairns and noticed that there is a 'Lion Mark' on the box, along with the normal CE mark. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion_Mark_(toys) I have not seen this on any other Hornby box before or since. I presume all of the Waterman Collection boxes were so adorned. Anyone know why (long shot)? Given there are no differences between this model and the others released of the same models at the same time in terms of quality and safety, why were they not all so stamped? RMweb Premium rab Posted July 16, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 16, 2020 Perhaps they were packed in a building previously used as an an egg packing station, using the same printing equipment. Oh dear, I wish I wasn't so tired, I need to run!
Steamport Southport
The lion in the middle at the top of the box? https://www.hattons.co.uk/25714/hornby_r2822_castle_class_4_6_0_earl_cairns_5053_in_early_br_green_pete_waterman_collection/stockdetail.aspx Just part of the packaging as a few had them. Or is it one of these? If so, I don't think they are meant to get them unless they are sold as toys. Jason

Jason Yes the red lion is yellow triangle, bottom of box next to CE mark
Ruffnut Thorston
I seem to recall a lion mark on some Hornby Railways packaging years ago now.... I think it is mentioned in Pat Hammond's volume 3?
Steamport Southport
Had a little look through boxes that I've got to hand. The only thing I can find with a little lion is an Airfix Cromwell Tank. Which has also got a Smiley Face logo with 8+. Jason
RMweb Premium Jeremy Cumberland Posted July 16, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 16, 2020 I imagine much of the Hornby range is EN71 certified, and they are members of the British Toy & Hobby Association, so they could apply the logo quite widely to their products. However, I also imagine that they choose not to because they don't want them thought of as being "children's toys".
andyman7
From the late 1980s to the late 1990s the Lion mark appeared alongside the CE mark on Hornby packing. I'm not sure why it seems to have made a random reappearance though. 1

Without being critical of Hornby it was an era where I had little interest in what they were producing. Jason
Invicta Informant
I have a 28xx Class (catalogue number R2917) that has the Lion mark on the outer sleeve. It is also on the back of the outer sleeve of the London Olympics 1948 Train Pack.
