1976 R.O.

01/02/76 47004(SF) on 1Z75 Cambridge-Folkstone West & return (Troop Special)
19/03/76 47327 at Hither Green (Context: Southfleet branch from Fawkham Jcn was disused during March. Hence empty coal wagons were worked from Brent-Hither Green then on to Kent collieries via Ashford, loaded wagons on the return route. Cl.47s normally work the Brent-Hither Green leg, occasionally through to Ashford)
20/03/76 47104 on 1Z11 Weston-super-Mare-Canterbury West throughout
10/04/76 47138 on Ealing Broadway-Folkstone Harbour. 47138 worked to Folkstone Jcn, 73134 then worked train to Harbour. Return service had 73134 from Harbour-Jcn with 47138 assisting at rear. After reversal at Jcn 47138 worked train back to Ealing.

Mentions that during period of 29/05 to 27/06/76, there were 40 Special trains from other regions - most of these were worked by cl.47 throughout, but some changed to SR traction in London area.

06/06/76 47256(CF) [green livery] on 1Z10 Reading General-Margate.
06/06/76 47080 'Titan'(CF) on 1Z80 Newport-Margate
47256 was booked to run via Chatham but due to a fire at Meopham, ran via Maidstone East, Ashford, Dover and Ramsgate to Margate (Ashford-Canterbury W.-Ramsgate closed due to engineering works).
47256 & 47080 Margate-Ashford(Chart Leacon) via Dover for fuel but unable to access Chart Leacon due to engineering works. Locos were failed, with 33038 & 33063 working return trains.
15/06/76 47216 on Hoo Jcn-Richborough oil train (normally cl.73)
19/06/76 47356(TO) [green livery] on High Wycombe-Margate. This was one of four Ercol Charter trains, each headed by cl.47s - one failed just before the return journey.
22/06/76 47324 piloting 45129 on Welbeck/Brent-Northfleet APCM coal train. The cl.47 pilots provide better acceleration in the SR suburban area and are used for their SSC when discharging. They are now often attached/detached at Clapham Jcn(W) instead of Brent(LMR) as previously.

Mentions that between 21/06-25/07/76 there were 28 Specials from other regions, generally worked throughout by cl.47 except those via LMR electrified lines which change to cl.33 in London area.
Cl.47 not allowed between Ashford-Ore so trains to Hastings via Rye change to cl.33 at Ashford.

03/07/76 47135(SF) on ER stock from Thornton Fields and work Folkstone West-Newcastle throughout
17/07/76 47130(SF) on ER stock from Cambridge and work 1Z20 Dover Marine-Leeds
 " /  " /  "  47170(SF) on ER stock from Thornton Fields and work 1Z21 Dover Marine-Bradford
(Both locos worked throughout, reaching Leeds via Brent and MML)

From 26/07-22/08/76 there were 29 Specials, 18 worked by cl.47 throughout. 16 were reported to need refuelling at Chart Leacon, usually run light engine from Margate, Ramsgate,Dover or Folkstone. 2 trains, returning e.c.s. were routed via Ashford - stock left in Ashford yard while locos refuelled at Chart Leacon.

03/08/76 47354(CW) on 1Z77 Dover Marine-Newcastle (believed to have worked l.e. to Dover)

From 24/08-25/09/76 there were 33 Specials from other Regions with 18 worked throughout by cl.47 (16 locos refuelled at Ashford CL)

28/08/76 47357(TO) on 1Z20 Dover Marine-Leeds
 " / " /  "  47178(BS) on 1Z21 Dover Marine-Bradford
(both locos refuelled at Ashford CL on e.c.s. journey from Neville Hill-Dover)
29/08/76 47482(BS) on Special from Ludgershall (SWD)
11/09/76 47438(BS) on 1Z95 Margate-Scarborough return Holiday Special.

The last complete R.O. I have is for 1969.
There are fewer mentions of Inter-regional Excursions etc. in general but of those, even where the headcode/route are given, many have no detail of the loco used.

c.02/69 1688/1709/1713/1722/1731 at Dartford on freight trains and have been seen shunting in the goods yard there
18/04/69 1670 passing through Dartford
23/04/69 1996 passing through Dartford
(possibly on freights as there is a reference to the February workings above. They are believed to have worked through from LMR)
25/05/69 1674 on 1Z76, Whit Sunday Excursion from LMR to Kent Coast
08/06/69 1840(D05) on 1Z20 Burton-on-Trent to Kent Coast. Loco failed at Ramsgate, so return train hauled by cl.33 6585. 1840 was repaired and returned l.e. to LMR the next day.
15/06/69 1631(D16) on Excursion from Bedford. Failed at Faversham Jcn - out of fuel despite gauge showing 650gal
"/ "/ " 1749(82A) on WR Mystex through Faversham - outward via Chatham, return via Ashford
 "/ "/ " 1933(82A) on WR Mystex as above
06/07/69 1559(40B) on 1Z68 Bedford-Margate Excursion
20/07/69 1686 on Excursion from Ealing Broadway

As an aside, on 21 & 22/08/69, strike action was staged by Norwood diesel crews in support of a demand for the abolition of through engine working on Excursion and similar trains from other Regions. The objection apparently being that LMR & WR crews on long-distance trains like these qualify for a mileage bonus.

Some interesting workings there Keefer. Green 47s to Margate in 1976.

47216 on the Hoo Jcn-Richborough oil train.

Anyway. Here is the latest update. More gaps filled. I am finding the whole exercise interesting.

Keep your observations coming.

I will probably extrapolate the 1980s tops document and the Depths of the SE division document at the end of the year from this root document.

So this is version 7 of all 47s seen on the SE Division.

Always meant to say, well done on trying to get such a reference work done.

Not my area at all so had to rely on published sources, no spotting notes I'm afraid!

You were of great help Keefer, thanks. I am already on V9 wittling the 160 down. So far 47703 has also been sighted.

Hi SouthernBlue80s

I use to live in NW Kent with South Eastern mainline running at the bottom of the garden :-)

I took photos from 1987 to 1998 of many Class 47s in that area, so I may be able to help with your compilation.

What ones are your missing ?

47372

47372 dragged EMUs around Kent during the heavy snows one year in the 80s, when 56s and other locos worked as well.

Hi Tim

Thanks for your offer. I think what I will do is get the list to the most complete state that I can soon. I have some detailed info on 47 workings to wade through. And then I will have a definite list of what is missing and i will contact you.

Cheers

Steve

BTW Great that you had the railway at the bottom of your garden.

Another one to cross off your list is 47359, a photo of it working 6S45 1245 Northfleet to Uddingstone at Clapham Junction in September 1974 appears in 'The Power of the 47's' by Brian Morrison.

Thanks.

Now down to 124 for sight.

47401 and 47404 have surfaced.

One I found interesting was

47349 worked from Canterbury 23/7/1987 and eventually ended up in Glasgow at the end of the day.

Still lots more work at my end.  But version 9 will be a big update. Watch this space

OK this a progressed a long way. My eyes have glazed over with class 47 numbers.

So I am going to give it another rest.

We are towards the end of this. And I will have it finished by Christmas.

Below is version 9

It is a very big update

Class47s_SouthEasternDivision_v9.docx

We now have 118 47s as not recorded as having visited.

They are listed here. If you come across any more info please post it up and I will polish it off and extrapolate the other docs from it in a few weeks. Thanks all

Thanks, very interesting. Many of those missing do make a bit of sense based on where they were allocated, but you do have to wonder how three WR namers 47083 ORION, 47510 Fair Rosamund and 47511 Thames were not recorded with all those Merrymakers and the like from the WR...

True. I am guessing they will be tracked down. Scottish 47469 and 47595 both made it down. Now down to 114 to be recorded.

325 was apparently in and out of Northfleet in 1988 - anyone got a sighting?

Not new sightings for the master list but the following details from 1974 editions of the Railway Magazine might be of interest :-

1666 'Odin' in green livery worked a 1Z88 Llanelli to Canterbury West Mystex in Feb 1972 - Photo of train at Factory Jn appeared in March 1974 edition, page 119.

1811 in green livery worked a Loughborough to Herne Bay (ECS to/from Margate) Mystex ON 15 July 1973 - Article detailing trip appeared in March 1974 edition, page 118.

1805 worked a Leicester to Herne Bay Mystex on 15 July 1973, mentioned in March  1974 edition, page 120.

47233 worked a Cardiff to Ramsgate Mystex from Reading on 19/08/74, mentioned in November edition, page 572.

47315 + 55 (Cl.45) worked an MGR train to Northfleet on 07/09/74, mentioned in December edition, page 619.

I will continue to look through my old copies of the Railway Magazine in case any of the missing 47's get a mention.

Only a few mentioned in the 1975 editions of The Railway Magazine :-

47226 worked a Plymouth to Folkestone West special (MoD?) and ECS back to Old Oak Common on 08/01/1975.

47088 worked a Yeovil Pen Mill to Canterbury West Footex on 11/01/1975.

47177 worked the 1200 Snowdon Colliery to Acton coal train on 13/01/1975.

47088 noted leaving Dover on what may have been a Motorail service on 02/07/1975.

47123 worked a Derby to Margate excursion on 07/08/1975.

47107 (failed) + 11 coaches destined Derby noted passing Herne Bay on 07/08/1975, being propelled by 4BEP+4CEP  to Faversham where the 47 was replaced by 33044. This may have been the return working of the excursion  worked by 47123.

47247 worked an Oxford to Ramsgate special on 18/08/1975.

47366 (in green livery) worked Thatcham to Hoo Junction ety tanks in late August 1975.

Somewhat unusual to send a different 47 back on an excursion wasn’t it? It was common enough for there to be more than one excursion to the Kent Coast in a day, so maybe they got mixed up in Margate/Ramsgate or wherever they got watered and serviced?

I’d like to have seen the lashup of 20 vehicles pulling into Faversham!

Only a couple of workings mentioned in the 1973 editions of The Railway Magazine, but they do include two locos on the required list :-

1834 (47353) noted on an engineers train at London Bridge on 17/02/1973.

1505 (47406) worked a Hull to Hastings special as far as Ashford on 24/03/1973, train worked forward accross the marshes by a Cl.33.

1811 (47082) worked a Reading to Margate special on 26/06/1973.

1976 R.O.

19/06/76 47356(TO) [green livery] on High Wycombe-Margate. This was one of four Ercol Charter trains, each headed by cl.47s - one failed just before the return journey.

The above specials also get a mention in the Railway Magazine (September 1976 edition) which states that the four Ercol specials on 19/06/1976 were worked by 47108, 47178, 47475 & 47488, so one of the reports is incorrect unless perhaps one of these is the failed loco.

Other 47's to get a mention in 1976 editions of the Railway Magazine were :-

47354 piloting 45112 through Clapham Junction on a Northfleet coal train on 24/10/1975

47076 noted at Hoo Junion on 11/02/1976

47293 worked a Mexborough to Herne Bay special on 15/05/1976

Going back a bit, 1970 editions of the Railway Magazine mention the following :-

1577 noted at Hither Green Depot on 16/11/1969

1670 worked a return Cardiff to Dover Mystex on 21/06/1970, photo of the train passing Sandling appears on pg.531 of the September 1970 edition.
