Londontram
Here's a picture of LMS 4F 4317 seen working on the former Highland railway in the 1930s Can anybody tell me the purpose of the elbowed pipe coming out the lower smoke box and going into the running plate near the edge. Also did it have them on both sides? Thanks all - Steve

Yes just the one side - only one exhaust steam injector was fitted, when they had one - not always IIRC.
Steamport Southport
Yes. It seems it was always the opposite side from the ejector pipe (the pipes fitted to the side of the boiler). This one is on the other side. https://www.rail-online.co.uk/p144309771/ec82a188 I seem to recall that some 2Ps had them as well. I can't find that much information on them. Some here on the Brassmasters website. Click the red link that says Prototype Notes. http://www.brassmasters.co.uk/4F_etches.htm Edited June 14, 2021 by Steamport Southport

Poor Old Bruce
Where they were fitted, it was on the fireman's side i.e. left-hand drive locos had them on the right and right-hand drive locos had them on the left.
