RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted July 2, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 2, 2021 Inspired by a photo of a motley row of coal merchants' offices posted by @MrWolf on @chuffinghell's layout thread I decided to make a collection of sheds to put next to the coal bins on my layout. There will be a few others like @Alister_G who will be along soon who also have a shed addiction. 12
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted July 2, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 2, 2021 Yes, My name is Alastair, and I have a Shed addiction. I have been clean for a 22 months and 38 days, but @Rowsley17D and @MrWolf have caused me to fall off the (coal) wagon. Here is the last one I had: but now I'm attempting this: which so far I've built the frame and added some cladding for: Al. 10 3 1
RMweb Premium Ian J. Posted July 2, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 2, 2021 Nice sheds. I'll be needing to build a few for my vignette of fictional Penmouth's heritage shed when the time comes. Sheds on a shed, if you will. I am, perhaps unfortunately for this thread, reminded of this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fifty-Sheds-Grey-Erotica-not-too-modern/dp/0752265458 1

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted July 2, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 2, 2021 As was raised on my Ladmanlow thread, we need to define terms... When is a shed not a shed, and when does it become a barn? Should huts be included? What about cabins? It's all very confusing... Al. 1
RMweb Gold Mick Bonwick Posted July 2, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 2, 2021 A most splendiferous idea. Let there be sheds! We need rules, though. What is a shed?

To add to this: Building that house locomotives are referred to as ‘engine sheds’; are we including those? Locomotive depots are referred to as ‘sheds’ do they count for our purposes? Platelayers huts/cabins; are these ‘huts’ (they don’t sell pizza Mr. Wolf!), ‘cabins’ (they’re not on ships) or sheds? RMweb Gold Mick Bonwick Posted July 2, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 2, 2021 If this was powered by a Land Rover engine it would have fitted both categories. Shame, really. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fastest_Shed 2 3
MrWolf
If we're going to start asking "What is a shed?" We're going to end up asking "What is art?" That way lies madness my friends... 1 4 2

Tortuga
I always took a “shed” to be a structure with a wooden framework clad in either wood or corrugated iron, but without permanent foundations. I’d say a hut is a small single roomed building and a cabin (on land) is a more permanent building.

I propose that for the purposes of this thread, the term "shed" will encompass all of the above, as well as engine sheds, goods sheds, oil stores, lamp stores, etc. Although the idea of the thread was first envisioned as pertaining to temporary or semi-permanent small structures, I think it's expanded from that original concept already. Let it be so... Al.
