Warley NEC 2011

According to one of the Warley members they are trying to fill the hole with other layouts and traders rather than spreading the existing stuff out. They have a waiting list but appreciate it may be too late notice for some. I know another G scale layout has already been provisionally put in but there's 100ft to fill.

As much as I like the show, I am put off by the great unwashed more than the Bag Brigade. It's not as if it takes much to have a wash in the morning before going to the show, so why so many folk turn up smelling like they've been dragged through a sewage works is beyond me.

Maybe a hose down stand, outside the entrance, would be a good idea? I'd certainly throw some money towards that idea.

Jack

I've always felt that a bevy of attractive young people handing out soap samples (like at trade shows) at the door could have an impact :stinker: Alternatively, have a few blokes dressed in Noddy Suits (NBCW protective suits) and wave wands over the guilty parties saying loudly "this one's lucky; Charlie, just under the limit for automatic detention at the Porton Down decontamination centre" (I know, I know, bad, BAD, iL Dottore... :nono: )

On a more serious note, I will be making my annual pilgrimage (up at 04:30 Saturday morning to get to Zurich airport in time...) and this year I will try and visit and chat with all the RMWebbers with layouts at the show.

I hope that we can have the RMWeb meet up at the centrepiece loco each day at 13:00 (as we have done so in the past)

It was pointed out to me that Model Rail Forum members were meeting by the loco at 13.00; maybe the bar is a more appropriate location for RMweb members (as that's where most people end up after ;))?

I hope to be down on the Sunday (I won't do my usual moans in this topic) as there's a few people I want to catch up with.

Sounds like a plan, 13:00 at the bar (but which one?, I recall there being TWO bars in the hall last year)

On a personal note, Andy, do you think we can get away again with the "big note" trick that netted us some free beer some years ago?

If we are to resort to a bar let it not be in the exhibition hall but upstairs in Wetherspoons where the beer is cheaper and drinkable!

Chris

I couldn't agree more! Especially for those of us who are CAMRA members and have their 50p off a pint vouchers..... :drinks: As it's the third week of the month, it might even be a case of "show membership card at bar" and get 50p off anyway...... ;)

In view of the information given here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/47292-squires-in-administration/page__pid__527012&do=findComment&comment=527012 I need to withdraw my comments about Squires in #48 and #50 posted last night. Very sorry to hear this confirmation and offer sympathy to all concerned.

I will be there on the Sunday too; will try and remember to come to the Wetherspoons at 1pm and try not to drink (I've got to drive).

to tell you the truth, I find Warley the most frustrating exhibition out there; far too many people and it takes ages to actually see the layouts you want due to the three deep crowds round them. If I'm honest, I'm going because I want to visit the specialist traders and buy all those things that most model shops don't seem to stock any more (e.g. anything that isn't ready made).

I'll be the scruffy looking one in a Troy Lee Designs baseball cap

With the absence of the Squires Stand and a couple of hundred square feet of space spare. Could we have the RMWeb booth? An oasis of calm and fresher smelling air. Where entrance is only permitted to those of a temperate nature and good manners who manage to pass the stringent sniff'ometer test.

Go on Andy........ You know it makes sense.

Don't forget the check room for rucksacks. (ducking for cover) :stinker:

Well said.

In my case, this also includes books.

The floor plan is now on the site

http://www.thewarley...hall%20plan.pdf

Also heard from an aquaintance in the club that they have filled the space vacated by Squires and asked other traders who stock tools to bring more.

I wonder how many there are, these days.

I don't think I'm alone in remembering major shows 10 or 20 years back - with about 3 or 4 firms, each bringing a large stand full of tools. I also remember the same shows including a number of well-stocked "motors, gears, wheels and kit parts" stands.

Am I imagining this - or am I just showing my age (mid 40s)?

Actually, the floor plan was interesting - when I checked it (earlier today), it only had stand numbers and no list of who's on each stand. Even if a "who's where" list appears on the Warley website, the stand arrangement doesn't look like the easiest to navigate quickly. (I've previously commented about how I initially go round all the stands quickly - then go back and look in detail at the ones that really interest me.)

I suspect I might be spending most of the Saturday finding my way round the show - shame the "meet" is during the day and not at the end, when I'll have loads of time to kill (one of the more frustrating aspects of going to these shows by scheduled coach).

Still, the "meet" is when it is - I hope it goes well. The same goes for other forum sites' "meets" - I've never been one for tribalism.

The idea of meeting up outside the hall (but still within the NEC complex) strikes me as sensible. I've actually got a number of reasons for saying this - but I'd rather not go into detail.

Anyway, I think I've said more than enough about all this stuff. I'm looking forward to the show, for all sorts of reasons - I'm not expecting to be disappointed.

Huw.
