Well progress has been slow, it's look after the grandchildren season again, and we won't be finished for another week!

Decided to have a go at planting the first hedge, after deciding against using scouring pads and rubberized horse hair, because I want very untidy hedges as per Somerset ones. After all in 1930 they didn't use machines attached to tractors to bush wack them.

This is just first pass using Woodland Scenic clumps and will probably add some small trees in there as well eventually.

I have removed the old gas works point from the mainline and trains are up running again. Some more testing to do before ballasting.

Next job is to build the Farm house, so I can work out the siting of everything.

Well haven't posted for awhile due to 2 weeks looking after grand children and then 2 weeks holiday in the States

post-254-0-99880400-1507133249_thumb.jpg

However I have made progress on the Farm and the Sheep field in virtually finished

post-254-0-25154600-1507133268_thumb.jpg

Work has started on the Farm Buildings with the House, Barn, and Pig sty's partially built. However I have run out of Wills coarse stone sheet and despite ordering some from Hattons it hasn't turned up yet due to their stock problems.

Also I need a couple of windows for the ground floor.

Got a lot done the last few days , now more coarse stone has arrived

You can see the general layout now

With house on the right, then barn and pig sty, then the grain store, and the piece of paper represents the cart shed.

Partially constructed most building to see how it goes together

Windows on top floor fitted and front door, still need to obtain 2 windows

Been away on holiday last week in Norfolk, but managed to get a bit done before going and a bit more since coming back.

Have nearly finished all the stone work sections and will post full progress over the next few days

Thought you might like to see the following, my method of joining the coarse stone sheets together

post-254-0-02542300-1508783838_thumb.jpg

2 sections of the Wills coarse stone joined with glue at the back of the barn and the joint is clearly visible

post-254-0-74709500-1508783849_thumb.jpg

After applying a temperate controlled soldering iron the joint is closed up, then given a coat of masonry mid stone paint, and the joint is only just visible

As promised another fuller update and more pics

post-254-0-24077500-1508859693_thumb.jpg

All of the "Stonework" has now been completed and so I am able to see how it all fits together.

I've laid the boundary walling temporarily in place, not sure yet whether to have a boundary wall at the front or to leave it open.

The internals of the house look very scruffy, but that because I'm reusing coarse stone sheets from the old tunnel embankment, and all will soon be hidden

Another overall view showing where the farm gate will go

post-254-0-29924700-1508859715_thumb.jpg

View of the cart shed, still got to add some more roofing beams and shed supports. I've closed off the far end, butt will leave the other end open so the farm carts can be seen better

View of the granary store with the completed steps, which where the hardest bit to do

post-254-0-13571500-1508859730_thumb.jpg

View of the pig sty just need some internal painting before I put the roof on

Some more progress

post-254-0-49284900-1509128549_thumb.jpg

The pig sty is finished other than painting. I have put a floor into the car shed, I'm experimenting with flexible plaster on top of the plasti-card to try and introduce some texture, Still waiting for it to harden

post-254-0-69650800-1509128559_thumb.jpg

I decided to move the farm house to the right, so a farm gate fits between it and the barn This necessitated re-doing the path etc and I decided it would look better scribed than simply  embossed. Also I have used a scrap piece of redutex for the stets

Took the following picture at Fort Laramie outside the gents toilet, when we were in the States last month, which I thought you might find amusing

post-254-0-85440600-1509280864_thumb.jpg

The plaster on plasti-card experiment for the floor of the Cart Shed didn't look right.

Then I looked at the redutex I had laid for the farm house and also the redutex I had used for the road outside the pub

post-254-0-22483000-1509281048_thumb.jpg

So I thought I would scribe a piece of plastic and see how it turned out.

I cleared all the plaster off and then sprayed it mat black so the scribe lines would show up as white to act as a guide.

Once scribed it was given a thin coat of burnt umber and then dry brushed with various colours.

I think that works

I have been trying to decide how to do the cover the farm yard itself and up until now hadn't come up with anything.

I'm now wondering whether  to use this method for the whole farm yard providing I can get a large enough sheet of plastic.

I think I will buy a sheet anyway and see how it turns out, nothing lost other than my time and a couple of pound if it doesn't. so watch this space.

How did you do the paving slabs in that last picture?

I take it you mean the paving slabs in the market place

I used at tool similar to this and a metal ruler

https://www.scalemodelshop.co.uk/scale-model-shop-plastic-cutter-scriber-sms-044.html

and brought a large sheet of  80 thou plastic sheet and stated scribing each slab out so it fitted the odd shape of the market place

Major Progress

Other than for weathering and touching up paint work the Farm house, grain store and pig sty are finished

The pictures aren't the best but the light, with all the rain, is appalling to day.

Still it enabled me to get some work done today.

Not sure the beams for the Cart Shed aren't too big. I had some odd bis of balsa which was 4mm so I used them. Do you think it looks right, before I go and get some more.

Just need some pigs

The Finished Grain Store

post-254-0-05661600-1510072614_thumb.jpg

Barn just needs a roof and some hinges for the main door, (although I can see from this pic the beam above the door needs a bit of work)

post-254-0-20373000-1510072634_thumb.jpg

The garden is still work in progress and I'm missing a window

Time for an update.

I've given up trying to scribe the farm yard floor. The first attempt failed because the plasticard was too thin and the whole thing warped!

Whilst doing the second sheet I made visit to Warley and saw the Will sets sheets and I realise I could use those instead

post-254-0-37929800-1511974174_thumb.jpg

Still got the cart shed to finish off, but my model shop has run out the wood strips I was using

The farm house gets it's window! I realised if I brought a pack at Warley I could use the other windows in the Gas Works and also I saved postage

The garden is planted up with Lupins now

I have brought  people, horse and odds and sods to start populating the yard, but they are awaiting painting

Thought I would have a change from farming so I've made a start on fitting the Gasworks into it's new home

post-254-0-06315500-1512158485_thumb.jpg

I covered the track with a layer of light weight ready mixed plaster last night and having cleaned it all up I'm testing a loco running on it

After alot of elbow grease, eventually it did,

Will have to do the same tomorrow now it's been coated in yard filth

post-254-0-26478300-1512158500_thumb.jpg

Having given the baseboards a coat of Green Scene's Textured "Yard Filth" paint , which was one  of the may things purchased at warley.

I'm seeing how everything fits in it's new location

post-254-0-21186700-1512158522_thumb.jpg

How it will look with the wall constructed

post-254-0-82050900-1512158537_thumb.jpg

A loco drivers view

The area on the right, is where the old bridge support used to be , It's been filled and given a coat Of green Scene's textured "Devon Soil", before having static grass applied.

As you know the shuttle used to run on this line and there is a point connecting it too the rest of the layout, to save money I never fitted a point motor to this, although fortunately I did drill the hole under the track. I'm not looking forward to crawling under the boards to fit a tortoise motor!

Built my second  Dart Castings wagon (The first is in the Wheelwrights having it's axle fixed)

However when I went to place it in the cart shed to see how it looked, I discovered that the shed wasn't tall enough!

So I spent yesterday adding some more height to the bottom half of the building

The farmyard wall has now been finished, with the end section made using modelling clay and the gate has been fitted

Me thinks time to have words with your architect!  :scratchhead:
