Ormskirk Shed

Hi good people,

can anyone help, we are looking for info/photos idealy of the Engine Shed and Coal hole at Ormskirk station LYR the shed was gone by the mid 30s

we have a couple of views of the Shed but no details of the office/workshops at the side adjacent to the Shed.

The coal hole, we have a faint photo of showing some windows, we don't know how many at present but it shows it was not exactly a typical LNWR/LYR arragement.

any help much appreciated.

many thanks

Peter A Leyland.

From LMS Engine Sheds, Vol 3, Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, Chris Hawkins and George Reeve:

ORMSKIRK

A two road shed for 'The working of the Skelmersdale Branch' was recommended by the East Lancashire Railway as early as 1853, but no action was taken. The L & Y had been making use of a tumbledown wooden shed at Ormskirk ('In its present state very unfit as an Engine Shed') and estimated that acceptable accommodation could be provided for £86.10s.0d. For this price the new structure (probably hardly any improvement) was erected and some years later was destroyed, presumably by fire. In 1876 a temporary shed was considered desirable, the company experiencing difficulty in finding staff willing to work in the open, and £200 was set aside for a new shed. A proper building was, of course, the only solution and this was at last provided in 1893, a standard building with northlight pattern roof, etc. L & Y shed No. 29, its 1929/30 allocation comprised three railmotors, six 0-6-0s and a single 2-4-2T. It closed in September 1935.

The photo was taken by W.A. Camwell.

The dates and chronology I have are a little different. With the original 1 track wooden shed and its replacement being located in a slightly different place to the 4 track brick replacement. While that source is usually excellent in providing costs and decisions made at board level to do things it does tend to omit the possibly more significant date of when the building was actually built and opened.

Hi,

many thanks for your help, it is difficult indeed to find anything with regard to the Shed and cole hole, we have one 2/3rd photo of the cole hole stage and two shots of the Shed.

A friend of mine is building Ormskirk station as it was in LYR days which was quite complex and rather large in terms of cattle traffic and goods workings and would make for a great model.

cheers

Peter
