G'Day Folks.

 

300mm = 75' about right size for a Elm or Beech, think it looks a bit more like an Elm.

Elms would be good. There were a lot of elms in Mill Hill before the 1970s when Dutch Elm Disease got them. My primary school's emblem was four elms.

G'Day Folks

 

As I said in my last update, a footpath was laid? behind the fence, I have a picture showing a bit of a footpath running alongside the line very near Mill Hill (The Hale) next to the arched bridge, now that the fence and path are in place the background will be filled with vegetation, trees and rough grass. A couple of signals have also been added.

 

A couple of pics of the area, including an ultra modern bit of technology..........well for my era, anyway.

G'day Folks

 

This year 2018 has been designated  year of the station, mainly because I'd like to finish the station I started in 2012, I go to the main buildings and windows done,and there it lapsed, still with the roof and a lot of other stuff to do, so the other day, I bought it inside, glued lolly sticks to the inside of the booking hall, as it had warped in the heat, to get it back into shape, then the roof and tiles were stuck on, every things had a coat of paint to see what it'll look like, which is were I'm at the moment, plenty still to do.

Hi Manna,

Just returned to your thread after a while away, the layout looks fantastic. Question.........is that Deltic one of the ones you got from me?, if so you've completed it in just a couple of years( maybe less) I had those kits for at least 20 years and did nowt!! (chickened out and bought the Bachmann NRM one). Anyway it looks absolutely brilliant...great work.

Hi Jessie. With the teddy bear fur, I've still got to trim it (scissors) as it's rather long, being a bit rough with the cutting gives it a natural look, I will still be going over it with a bit of static grass because when you trim it you can see the cloth base, here's some pics of it when trimmed and painted.

It's one of yours, it's still not quite finished, have to finish the buffer beam and a bit of a touch up, paint wise, at least yours weren't twisted and went together easily, I'll try and get a couple more pics for you.

12 deg in Melbourne earlier, torrential rain (but not as bad as Hobart) and a full gale. My flight home was delayed an hour as a result. Grrrr...

Your station building has captured the GN look so well - most excellent.

 

I might only suggest that you consider a bit more weathering to an almost creamy-grey, despite the original brick colour? (Although I note in one of the last pics of the Deltic, you have done this, so perhaps it is just the colour reproduction in the other pics?) I only say that because the GN buildings I am most familiar with, along the ECML, and before that, at Totteridge and High Barnet tube stations, were like that (where brick cleaning had not yet been done) despite having not seen a steam loco for many decades. Thank you for the replies, a very cold night last night, about 4c Aggggggh.

 

Mike, I'll be having another go at the colour of the station, it came out a little to yellow, I have a couple of pics of Edgware, the front of the station was quite clean, but the platform side was filthy, some way to go.

I had a bit of time on my hands today, so I thought I'd have a go at weathering the station, even though it doesn't have doors, barge boards and a load of chimneys. I started off clean and it slowly got grubbier.

G'day Folks.

 

well it's that time of the year to do a bit more work on the layout, I get to easily distracted by engine building, but I seem to have lost my mojo for engine building at the moment, which is the layouts gain, I've been slowly building up the ground level around Mill Hill station, not to high as you won't see the station or the trains, the cutting in real life wasn't to deep, a little bit more than the height of a train. That's been plastered, for about 5ft, and before I go any further, I wanted to get the station in, so I won't damage anything at the front.

 

Some 15 mm ply was cut fitted to the baseboard, held down with PVA and nails (nailgun) then 3 mm ply was cut to a template I had made earlier, and as usual, the Jigsaw blade was to blunt to cut it, and not having a spare, I had to use a panel saw, by just using the tip it cut the ply to the curve I wanted, this was jiggled about to get the best fit, using a BR Mk 2 coach to make sure I could run it through without it touching the edges, then that to was glued and nailgunned down, the only bit I couldn't nail down us under the Air Con, that is only glued down, a LNER wagonplate will make sure it stays in place.

Looks good Terry. Are you going to include the Midland main line bridge or just stick with Bunns Lane bridge?

I did kinda measure up a four track bridge, for the Midland mainline, but it looked so out of place, it would have been something like 300 mm wide, so I'm sticking with Bunns Rd bridge.

I photographed the Bunn's Lane bridge just a few years ago...

That's a fascinating slide show. The school mentioned in slide 17 was my primary school. The playing field backed on to the line and until closure in 1964 we could watch the goods trains to and from Edgware - usually diesel-hauled (anyone know what class?) but very occasionally an N2.

 

The bridge I had in mind was the one referred to in slide 28.

My grandparents lived in a railway cottage that backed onto the railway at East Finchley (my grandfather had been a signalman in the King's Cross district) and I can remember seeing the goods trains shunting in the yard.  I've got a picture somewhere of an N2 as you say, but also remember diesels a bit later.  I've seen pictures in books of BTH Type 1s D82xx type (later Class 15) on goods trains on that line, but seem to remember also seeing English Electric Type 1s (Class 20).

Glad you liked it. There are several other such railway walks on the site but so far I haven't been able to persuade anyone else to do that kind of photographing and writing up.

 

Sadly, as you're probably aware, there's nothing visibly remaining of the former bridge in slide 28. I wasn't able to get off the road to check the sides as one half was being cleared for housing construction and the other half was a fenced-off industrial site.

That's right. The bridge was demolished as part of the remodelling of the Bunns Lane/Flower Lane junction. That was long after I had moved away from the area so I don't know exactly when it happened.

Thank you for the, slide show, I often trawl the net looking for information on the Edgware branch, but haven't seen that before, just in case you didn't know the big office block on the site of the station, was the HQ for 'Green Shield Stamps'.

 

 I know I said 2018 was the year of the station...........then I forgot, lol, I'll get back to it shortly, it's only bargeboards and chimney's.
