manna
G'day Gents Most of the building has now finished, so it's on with the layout, a track plan has been finalized, with 'The Hale' going along the back wall under the air con, and it's good yard, along the left wall, it's the only way I could get it to fit. Track laying is to start ASAP A J52 has had a condenser dome fitted on the top of the saddletank, I removed the tank filler back, and then drilled a hole for the condenser dome ( an electrical fitting). manna

For any Northern readers who may think that an air-conditioned railway room is an extravagant affectation, have a look at the temperatures in South Australia over the last few days - and we're not even in summer yet!

DougN
Come on St E... it doesn't get that hot here in Aus! was only 30 yesterday here in Melbourne... back to 20 today but I think Monday might be a nice 35..... At least we know that the Air Con is there for cooling.... Must admit as I am getting older my wife keeps asking for a A/C in the master bedroom.... I feel for Manna though a tin shed is certainly a way to increase the temp for the model railway! I still can't figure out why but I always get more modelling done in Summer than winter!

Doug, we're the other way round this week - 24 yesterday but 33 today. Adelaide was in the high 30s earlier this week with a total fire ban. On the advice of Harry Howell of Stafford fame, I included reverse cycle A/C in the spec for the new garage/railway room, together with wall and ceiling insulation. A good decision. I've got more done in summer than winter since I stopped playing cricket. Now that I've retired from rugby refereeing as well I hope to increase winter productivity accordingly.
manna
G'day Gents. Thanks for the replies, it can certainly get hot here, 46c is our hottest so far, it started to melt one of my station building. The Air Con came out of a caravan, so it's a nice little self contained unit, keeps the railway shed nice and cool, since my update this morning (our time), a fluoro light has been installed above the air con. Track laying has commenced, it has now reached the far end of the 'three arch bridge' and may reach the Hale by this evening. manna
DougN
Manna you sound like you are heading for a high modelling period. I am a bit envious of St E and yourself being stuck at work at the moment and again being on family duty for the entire weekend as Mrs DougN is doing a course tomorrow so I have netball in the morning with Ms DougN and Mast DougN will be a lounge lizzard all morning... no doubt there will be a list of things to do tomorrow afternoon.... my usual is to sit down to do some modelling at 5.00PM on a sunday night.... I should actually up date my layout thread it has been years and things move at a geological pace
manna
G'day Gents I know what you mean DougN, one day tearing about then dead stop, glaciers move faster sometimes. Managed to get the circle completed, just the goods yard and Edgware's yard entrance to do.......tomorrow. manna
manna
G'day Gents After a full day of track laying, I feel as if I'm getting somewhere, the goods yard is down, Edgware's station throat has also been laid and a new small fiddle yard built over a redundant bit of scenery (removed)five extra roads, after everything has had a good clean train service's will be resumed, the replacement bus service can be cancelled. manna

worzel
Hi Manna great layout and posts I was born & brought up in Mill Hill so i am very interested in the Edgware Branch my uncle started his working life as an office boy for a coal merchant in Edgware goods yard he ended up as the chief accountant for the CEGB !! my next project when I finish !!! the RBL will be woodside park in 1960 as I want to make it an exhibiton ready layout . could be really interisting now we have RTR J50 N2 and the various first gen diesels However could anyone reading this post tell me how they shunted the yards at woodside park and totteridge when there was a 20 min interval tube service throught the day ??
manna
G'day Gents A bit of progress, we've had a few hot days, so staying inside is a sensible idea, a loading dock and ramp to the goods yard has appeared along with a scenic break and embankment and bridge help to conceal the fiddle yard. manna
manna
G'day Gents Bit more work on Edgware, well The Hale goods yard, I bought a dozen sheets of emery paper at the local hardware shop the other day, some of them have been glued down and make a fair representation of Tarmac, still a bit of tiding up around the edges. manna
manna
G'day Gents Time for another update, with Christmas and the very hot weather behind us, it's time to get back in the shed. Late in 2012, whilst replacing the shed roof, I put a leg through the ceiling, without to much damage to ones self, but a Hornby coach suffered terminal damage from some steel holding the plastic sheet in place, which follow my leg down the hole, now it's time to repair the hole, a sheet of plastic has been covering the said hole, for about four years, I do have an ulterior motive for doing it now, as I have to lift the fiddle yard, I want to put down two large sheets of cork, rather than the hotch potch of foam/cork or no underlay, I'll also be replacing five PECO points that have had there day, must be about 25 years or more. manna Edited March 7, 2017 by manna
manna
G'day Gents I've now re-laid the fiddle yard, complete with cork underlay, looks a lot neater, about 15' of mainline was re-laid at the same time, eased a few tight curves and managed to squeeze an extra siding in, which is ideal for the C12 and the push-pull train, or a short engineers train. manna
manna
G'day Gents Time to resurrect, my almost dormant layout thread, I've done a little in the way of scenery, only a bit of polystyrene with weights holding it down, winters been cold and wet and taking an age to dry, so only some loco pics, all posed with a short parcels train. A C2 Atlantic, with the wrong tender (building that now) A J6 A N1 A Q1 All in and around Edgware. manna Edited September 5, 2017 by manna
manna
G'Day All I have finally wandered out to the shed and looked at the layout.........and thought it might benefit from some ballast, I've had an ice cream tub sitting under the layout for many years (had the ballast, for 30 years) it's starting to turn into sandstone !! All the track is as good as it's going to get, the wiring is OK (it works, but just don't stare at it, for to long ) so what the heck, lets go waste some time, out came the PVA, bottle of water and a one litre bottle of washing up liquid, the ballast was poured over the track in the time honored way and brushed around with a medium sized modelling paint brush, when I had it the way I wanted it, I gently tapped the underside of the baseboard with a pair of pliers (couldn't find the hammer) to settle the ballast in place, then using and eye dropper I spent the next couple of hours gluing it all down, boring 'yes' but it works for me, I still have a bit of tiding up to do, but that's 12' of ballast down, now that's made up of the platform, main line ?one siding, and a 5' siding done in sand, to represent ash, now I've almost run out of ballast, I hope the rest dos'n't take another 30 years. manna
manna
G'Day Folks The ballast is virtually finished, so I've started on the scenery, a bit of grass along an embankment, and with the ballast done you can see where it's going. There are still pins in the embankment holding steady while it dries. time for some pics. manna

manna
Where to you get your teddy bear fur from Terry? G'Day Folks I got the teddy Bear fur from Spotlight, in Adelaide 1sq mtr is about $16, it's a little darker than I would like, but that's all they had, at least it's not 'Blue' and the 'Nap' is a bit long, but I'll trim it down a bit. manna
