Just goes to show, if you allow 1 diesel in, they take over!

Not a problem on the GCR where they co-exist with steam - 2x 33s at our recent diesel gala.

I suppose that it is interesting looking back at any preserved railway in-house magazine, but in a Bluebell News over 20 years ago this was captioned - 60103 Flying Scotsman will now not be visiting the Bluebell Railway in 1993. It is hoped a visit can be arranged for the future. I don't remember it ever being down the Bluebell, correct me if I am wrong, but it has been a long time waiting but it's almost here, that's if you can get anywhere near it, they have estimated to the authorities that circa 50,000 people could be in attendance over the week it will be there. As a bit of fun, what other locos have visited the Bluebell?

Green Arrow and Leander have visited in the past. Both for their Giants of Steam weekends. Green Arrow I saw on the weekend and that made me decide not to visit either before or after as there were too many people there and too much pushing and shoving. For Leander I think I went the weekend after and there was hardly anyone there so it was a pleasant visit and I was able to get some nice photos. City of Truro as well but when I visited that had broken something so wasn't in use. Prairie 5199 and other visitor and of course Ivatt 2MT 41312

Carrying on the theme of early editions of the Bluebell News, back in the start-up days of the Bluebell they had plans to buy an ex GW Railcar, sounds like there was a list being produced at the time because the ex GER J15 is mentioned. 78059 was going to be bought with its tender, it's some years later that they decided to make a std 2MT out of it, good idea in hindsight.

Quick pic from day two of the Flying Scotsmans visit to the Bluebell Railway. Had a lovely day and enjoyed our trip. Thanks to the NRM and the Bluebell team/volunteers for making it happen.

Best wishes

Some photos from today at Sheffield Park. This is around 8:30 and light-up was well on the way. Camelot had already left on the early train and the Q and S15 were coupled up waiting to depart on the 9:10 in the station

Things went slightly wrong (for taking photos that is), the S15 847 had returned from East Grinstead into the up platform so the Scotsman came through on the nearside down platform, it was non-stop so I assume the S15 was on the otherside to make it easier to pick-up passengers.

The result was that it was too close, fantastic loco though, sounded like it was just out for a stroll, it looks like a speed merchant and not really suited to 25mph.

A friend asked me to take some photos of wagons if I could for modelling purposes, I'll post some photos of the home locos first, but if anyone can match the wagon photos to a model it would be appreciated. Be careful if you respond that you don't keep repeating all the photos.

This is the SECR class C 592 about to do some carriage shunting. Apart from anything eastern this has to be my favourite loco, something to do with having driven it as part of a Clive Groome training course many moons ago.

Here is the S15 847 and Q 30541 coupled up waiting to depart on the 9:10. They have moved the departure signals at SP further north to increase the train lengths, the plan will be to extend the platforms I understand and to position a signalbox on the north end of the down platform.

I was mucking around here to see what the camera was up to, not every preserved railway is lucky enough to have pre-nationalisation stock, but this is in the birdcage brake and shows you the repro brasswork that goes to finish these coaches.

The Q class had come off the front of the S15 at Horsted Keynes. In the distance you can see the WD 0-6-0T, it's in wartime grey but somebody has been at it with a spraybrush adding shades of Southern Oliver and Malachite by the looks of it.

At Horsted Keynes the Q class was giving free Queen Mary brake van rides around the station confines.

I was lucky enough to be treated by my lovely wife to one of the evening Pullman services. Weather was threatening to rain but it actually turned out fine. Food was excellent and service superb.

ssssshhhhh, wooooow, we are in enemy territory here, I'll talk in code as an A2 to an A2/2, I agree FS looks right for its current condition, I don't think that it will happen but in apple green and as close to it's 1920's condition would be nice, I know, wrong boiler, wrong tender etc etc.....but personally this loco topped it when it paid a visit some year ago, with the bark from its exhaust it was an animal, very impressive and another NRM loco.

Would like to know what year this might have been? The trees causing the shadows have long disappeared since the carriage shed and museum have been built.

My 10  favourite shots taken by me and my partner on Thursday, I have never seen Flying Scotsman in the flesh. My parents, partner & I had a really wonderful day, and I can cross travelling behind Flying Scotsman off my bucket list, memories I shall treasure forever.  :)

I can't quite get my head around all the people complaining about the price on their Facebook page, personally I thought it was damn cheap for a Flying Scotsman event, I felt quite sorry for the social media team who seemed to end up getting quite short with people, I would too!

We managed to travel on all 3 service trains + the breakvan ride, 'the full anorak package' as my Dad put it ;)

I made the full album public on Facebook and can be viewed here :) https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10158365615115391.1073741837.773265390&type=1&l=c5da591d1e

Some very nice photos that gave a very good indication of how good an event it has been. I did not go as I am not a great lover of Flying Scotsman, to me it is just another steam engine but I know others love following it and that is the joy of having a choice.

I find it very sad that people have to complain so much about prices for all things railway. We all know just how much had to be spent on Flying Scotsman to get it back to the condition it is in now and all the other locos you see at preserved lines around the country also cost a fortune to keep in working order. The only way to pay for them is to charge to see them and travel behind them. I think in the circumstances the Bluebell social media team may have been wise to have closed down when things started to get nasty and waited a week, the noise would soon have gone away.

I am looking forward to visiting the Bluebell soon but for a normal two train service day. Before that I have a day on the Mid Hants as Guard on Friday with that well known little blue engine that people treat like Marmite!

Glad you had a good day and thanks for sharing the photos.

Thanks, and you're welcome :) One of the best parts about the whole day was everyone smiling and waving at each other, people on the train, people by the line-side, people on the platforms, Sainsbury's Customers and staff who just happened to be in the Car Park at East Grinstead, everyone! I can't remember when I last experienced anything like that. A joyus day indeed, and so wonderful to see the next generation of enthusiasts just as excitable as their parents, grandparents and even great grandparents.  :)

Although the poor Grandmother sharing our compartment with her Daughter and Grandson looked bored out of her mind :') but a rhubarb and custard soon brought a smile to her face :P

I think the only one of those types not available either r-t-r (though not necessarily in the liveries shown) or in kit form is the van numbered 45788, which appears to be a 9ft wheelbase example with the distinctive SR "Power" brake.

I've built one of these using a Ratio kit on a modified Cambrian underframe with ABS castings for the brake gear and buffers.

The opens are available as Cambrian kits, the other vans from Ratio kits and Bachmann r-t-r (also the Queen Mary, of course) and I think the engineers' wagon as a Chivers Finelines kit.

Going to the Branch Line weekend, can anyone suggest a nice pub near Scaynes Hill, Haywards Heath, for evening meal Saturday, traditional pub grub style please?

There are a couple within striking distance, although not been to either. I would suggest a short drive into Horsted Keynes village and both pubs on the village green are highly recommended for food and drink. The Crown is the better pub, but the Green Man is the other one just in case the Crown is packed.

Next weekend is Real Ale & jazz at the Railway on the Friday night.

http://www.bluebell-railway.com/whats_on/rail-ale-evenings/

It looks as if an extra train has been added on 23rd June - Harvey's special.

For £37.50 you get the Railway, Jazz, Bangers & Mash and your first pint. There is a selection of 3 beers on the train, 3 at Horsted Keynes and 2 at Sheffield Park. Highly recommended.

Any idea what has happened to the news section on the Bluebell website? It hasn't been updated since 28Apr17?

The Bluebell model railway weekend coming up on 24/25Jun.

Richard Salmon advised a while ago that he would not be able to update it as much as he had. He was recently in Germany, maybe he is back there?
