Tetleys Mills- the sale of the layout and collection.

It' so sad to see such a wonderful collection being split up but it's good to know it's all in a good cause and lovely to see so many offers of help. I would if I could but I suspect that Wensleydale is just a step too far...

I am, though, interested in the buildings. Any of them (apart from the L&Y style railway buildings - I'm firmly LNWR!) would grace my West Riding layout - cottages, mills, bridges etc. - especially theBullock and Cowes complex - and it would be great to have a memento of Tetley Mills. Have you given any thought about how to dispose of them?

Would this layout and rolling stock be a candidate for the Ashford project, a least it would remain intact.

Simon

This was discussed in post #21 on the first page (copied below)

I've discussed this with Andy, as we agree that it is an attractive proposition. Unfortunately the reality is that this project is at least three years away, and we would not be able to offer a complete layout anyway. Had Tetley's Mills been intact when Dave died, I'm sure someone somewhere would have wanted to give the layout a new home, but one of the saddest aspects of the whole thing is that the old layout is no more, and the new one got no further than building of baseboards and those two lovely dioramas. For that reason, we see no other alternative than to sell items separately.

There are actually only five buildings left, as I discovered somewhat to my surprise today. I knew Dave had sold quite a lot, and that he had re-used some on the two completed parts of the new layout, but I had thought they would be more. Tony Wright has done a marathon photo shoot today, over 100 images, for which I am extremely grateful. When he has had time to process that lot, they will go to Andy to add to the thread, and photos of the five buildings still for sale will appear then.

The two beautiful completed dioramas will be very carefully cut out of the layout next week, and will be taken to Coventry, where they will be displayed at the forthcoming show. Photos will also appear on this thread. At the end of the show, they will be sold to the highest bidder. Either could be incorporated into a layout, one being particularly suited to that, or alternatively they would be great just to be displayed and enjoyed. Sadly, we see no way of putting them in a museum or anywhere else on permanent public display.

I shall be discussing how to run this auction with Andy Y next week, but my preliminary thought is that if possible there should be some way that people unable to get to Coventry can bid. The one huge difficulty about that is that there is no way these could be committed to the postal service, so the buyer will have to collect, or arrange collection. I can't see a way around that frankly, but will of course listen to any comments or suggestions. The question of how to deal with bids from those who cannot be present is another problem that has to be solved. My preliminary thought on that would be that "sealed bids" should be made to me by PM, by 1200 hours on Friday 12th. I would then tell Andy what the highest bid from those not attending was, and of course if it exceeded any made at the show it would win. Comments would again be welcomed.

Thanks Guys - in military parlance 'OP' means Observation Point and as my link goes to the latest post I was confused!

Gilbert a silly question maybe, but was Tetleys Mills DCC or analogue?

Tetley's Mills was analogue, But Dave had seen the light, :sungum: , and the new one would have been DCC. Which reminds me, somewhere in the layout room there must be some DCC kit, as I know he had bought some. That will have to be sold as well. :sad_mini:

Time for an update over and above what I have replied to above. Today I was able to finally locate everything that had been on the original list I made in February 2013, and save for one or two things that I know Dave had sold in the meantime, all now tallies.

With help from Ben Jones this morning, I have now found all of the goods stock, and have processed quite a bit of it. We are not going to photograph every wagon folks. and the same applies to a lot of the coaches. One Bachmann MK1 looks very much like another, and most people know what they look like anyway. Where coaches are not in very good condition I will explicitly mention that in the description, if I have not done so already, and Tony did at my request photograph just one or two to illustrate what I mean. So, you will be told that there are for example 15 empty mineral wagons, and 8 unfitted vans. I was going to offer these in packs of five or ten, but in the end there aren't, save in a few instances, enough to do that. I shall assess that issue again when I've finished the inventory, and there may be some more specialised wagons which would be better together. We shall see.

You may notice that I have edited the original list as some items have already been sold, and several others are sold subject to receipt of payment. I have also had a lot of offers or enquiries particularly for the locomotives, so if you are considering getting one or more, act quickly, or you may be too late!

If nobody has taken it already I can take in parcels for Plymouth (home) and Exeter (work) plus surrounding areas (including the other side of the river into Kernow if I must). I work with a chap who lives at Bude who I am sure I can cajole into helping.

Hello, I am new to RMweb and just signed up. I am also just starting back in modelling after a long break and starting from scratch with new 00 layout having previously had N gauge. I am sorry to hear this sad news but could be interested in some wagons, for instance block of mineral wagons 10/20 depending what is available. I could collect, could you please let me know how I can make an offer? Many thanks Andy

Good Morning all,

Interest is very high, I already have nearly 70 messages in the folder I have set up for Tetley's correspondence, and 8 more in my inbox awaiting reply. This isn't a job I can share - all sorts of problems could arise if bids were being submitted to two or more people - so may I please ask you to bear with me if I take a little while to respond to you. I will do so as soon as I can. Having said that, I'm now taking a break from the PC till this evening!

Gilbert, regarding your quandary of delivering parcels to those within the UK and unable to collect could I suggest "pass the parcel". A member within easy driving distance of you takes it to '"B", who then takes it to "C" until it reaches its destination. A few new friendships might also be formed.

And for those overseas could the services of Hatton's be enlisted?

Another quick update. I still have high levels of interest in many items, and am updating the original list as things sell. I have also decided to put current high bids on there, so that you can see exactly where things stand. I shall allow 48 hours to elapse after I post the bid, and if I don't get a better one by then, I shall sell at that price.

Warley is certainly in our minds. If there is still a significant amount left to be sold after Peterborough show, then we will be contacting them and asking for some space.

I can't make it to Coventry, rather annoyingly, despite it being fairly close to me, as I'm already triple-booked over that weekend and the show has to come last in the priorities. And Peterborough is only a vague possibility, due to distance. But I will definitely be at Warley, so a) if you do have stuff left over by then I'd certainly welcome the opportunity to take a look at it, and b) if you need help manning a stand I'd happily offer a couple of hours or so if necessary.

Many thanks for that offer Mark. If things carry on the way they are doing at present there won't be much left to sell at Peterborough, let alone Warley, but I will bear you in mind if we do have a stand there.

I put these pictures originally on my Wright Writes thread, but folk may not have seen them.

Since it's been promised that pictures of Dave's two dioramas to be shown at Coventry will appear on this thread, here they are. The first five show the larger one. I was able to get to both sides of this but could only take a picture of the smaller one from inside the layout.

His work is truly outstanding.

Some of the stock shown is available for sale.

Whilst I appreciate many will be disappointed if they don't get what they want, don't forget that you can remember Dave in a different way by making a donation to the collection site that Andy set up - he put full details in the Obituary topic last month (post #112 on 26 August)
http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/89221-david-tetleys-shakespeare/?p=1565592

This is a direct link to "Just Giving" - https://www.justgiving.com/TetleysMills/

I realise that some will have made donations direct to Cancer Research, but I should have thought that a few more would have responded
