Mike 84C
My word thats a beet train and a half! and a really nice photo shot with the train receding into the distance. To much experience of real containers to get excited about them but yours are really good models, the side door is a little" Vieve la differance" !
Irish Padre
Love your layout and projects, Kirley. It’s like a lucky dip - all the best bits of Irish railway history !
jhb171achil
The beet loads - what exactly are those bits? I know it's a bought load, but are they some sort of small wood-chips, out of curiosity?

kirley
CIE 20’ Coal Containers I decided to do a few of these roofless containers and was hoping to use some of C-Rails unpainted kits. Unfortunately Arran was out of them so I got some from Knightwing and scratched built some from plasticard. All had to be covered with plastic strips to give the corrugated effect, a slow and expensive process. I used foam which I spray painted black to the coal effect. RMweb Gold Robert Shrives Posted December 19, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 19, 2020 I like the fact you picked up on the various styles of coal containers used. I did look to see if the C Rail and Knightwing ones matched but not quite.. Needless to say the latest offering from Accrusacale for the BR version differ again. I guess it is a lot of strip to make up box - I have asked Robert Roache who did 40 foot beet bodies if he had the time and importantly the inclination to adapt files to the type with the upper plain section. kirley
NIR Class 70 6 Car Set This is my first project for 2021 inspired by Colm Flanagan’s Set seen at many Model Railway Exhibitions and the work of Darius43 on RM Web. I did a 4 Car Set back in 2010 using Colm’s method but this time I used Worsley Works brass sides. Alan also made up sides for the Dining Car 89 (555) and also a first class coach. I started with the two Intermediate Coaches using old Airfix coaches I had. Lots of cutting to start off. and interiors to be built. Roof vents to be manufactured. RMweb Gold Robert Shrives Posted January 10, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 10, 2021 I Join the crowd looking on in awe, this looks a really good project. Hope to learn as in the gloat box is a 3 car and some 315 class (emu) hopper windows to attempt a replica of the class with the other windows. First question if I may , what size for the roof vents ? thanks Robert

It's just a guess by me, 4 x 4 mm plasticard with a V shape cut into one end, 14 needed for the Intermediates. 1
Lambeg Man
Hi Kirley, An impressive project which I will study closely. A couple of questions. How did you remove the old sides from the Airfix carriage? Knife, saw or Dremel? If using WW brass sides, is it essential to retain the upper part of the old carriage 'frame'? On 10/01/2021 at 17:18, kirley said: Alan also made up sides for the Dining Car 89 (555) and also a first class coach. Surely 550 rather than 555? Is the 'first class' coach a Brake/1st driving trailer? Good luck with your efforts. LM
RMweb Gold Colin_McLeod Posted January 12, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 12, 2021 Nice work. I recall 555 running as an intermediate trailer between AEC power units 111 and 112.

The set was seen regularly on the Belfast to Lisburn locals.

Is the 'first class' coach a Brake/1st driving trailer? Steve you zoned in on my key issue in doing this type of construction. I always find getting roofs to sit properly is a problem. I try and keep as much of the original coach to provide strength and keep everything true. I do recall someone tell me they removed the whole side of the coach and replaced it with the brass side. That approach would be a lot easier to do and you would not end up with the double thickness of the plastic and brass where the side meets the roof. However I never had the courage to go down that route but would love to hear from anyone who did it and how it worked out for them. To cut the sides I use anything on the work bench. The dremel is the quickest but messy. I can only find cutting wheels of 22mm diameter and a smaller one would be very useful for the perpendicular cuts. The dining car is of course NIR 550, apologies for the typo. The First Class sides are still awaited from Worsley Works.
NoelG
Nice job Kieran. Do you mind me asking how did you do the tumblehomes?

This is how I do it but I'm sure there are better ways. I use this jig which has also been used for soldering as the burnt marks confirm. I mark on the brass where I want the bend to start and match it up with the black line on the jig. I then hold down the brass with a steel ruler. As you can see from this angle the amount of curve you will get. I apply pressure on the brass with a block of wood and sometime use a hammer to provide extra pressure. You should end with something like this. If it's not right you can move the line upwards and reply pressure. Hope this explains the process. 1
