RMweb Gold chris p bacon Posted June 10, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 10, 2015 I love anything to do with Penryn as that's where Muvver came from, still have some family there but don't visit as often as I should (Last May!) But at least we're going to St Ives in July for 4-5 days, just might have to walk in your shoes.....
marky7890
Had a busy few days whilst off work on holiday taking advantage of the sun and getting out and about around the lines of Cornwall, Firstly my trip down the Looe valley on Saturday 15th August. Having got the 1A81 HST up from Truro I walked down the valley to give Coombe Junction Halt a visit. The only person to get off the train being the guard to change ends, I didn't join it either. This was heading back up to Liskeard, so It wasn't too long a wait for it to return back down the hill. Here we see the 11:12 from Liskeard to Looe approaching Coombe Junction itself. 150123 waits for the guard to return to the train before continuing to Looe. 150123 seen arriving at St Keyne with the 12:12 service from Liskeard, clouds had just covered the sun shortly before it arrived. The 13:24 service from Liskeard seen arriving at Causeland. And departing. Passing Plashford bridge south of Causeland working 13:56 from Looe to Liskeard. I had a quick rest at Sandplace before continuing onto Terras Crossing. 150123 passing Terras Crossing, this was the 14:28 Liskeard to Looe After Terras crossing I went back to Sandplace to watch the next down train to Looe. This being the 15:43 from Liskeard. After an hour at Looe I headed back to the station to catch the 17:28 back to Liskeard.

Jock67B
Thanks Marky, Lovely crisp images as always, and you appear to have been very lucky with the weather. On the subject of Newquay, I wonder how many people looking in know of the harbour branch? It can still be traced across the road from the station and curving sharp left in front of the GW hotel where it becomes a footpath, sloping downwards towards the harbour and entering a steeply sloping tunnel (closed off at the top) and coming out at the back of the harbour. When I lived in Cornwall in the seventies, the end of the tunnel had large doors on it and some sort of water sports company storing gear there. In the peak of the Pilchard industry, the track extended across to the isolated section of pier that sits in the middle of the harbour. Sorry if you already know all about it, but for those who don't, it really is worth researching! I won't bore you by going on about my wonderful four plus years living there as the story has appeared on several threads, but my time spent in the County was some of the best times of my life and your photographs bring back nostalgic feelings for which I'm truly grateful. My wife and I have visited most years throughout the last twenty five or so, but sadly, serious illness means I probably won't be able to make it again! Kind regards, Jock. edcayton
The bottom end of the tunnel was the Newquay Aquarium for many years before they built the Sea Life Centre. The car park where the top of the tunnel had been (now Sainsbury's) was known as the Whim, which is what winding engines were known as in that part of the world. Jock is quite correct about part of the line being a footpath, still known as "the tram" locally. The line crossed the main street by the old bus station and the new bus station is now built on it as it runs behind the shops. marky7890
On Tuesday 18th I went up the Tamar Valley Line to Gunnislake, starting and ending at Penryn. 153333 & 153373 at Penryn on 08:50 Falmouth Docks to Truro 43092 at Truro working 08:44 Penzance to London Paddington Crossing the Royal Albert Bridge 150248 at Plymouth before working 10:54 to Gunnislake. On the Tamar Valley Line near the Royal Albert Bridge and Tamar Bridge. 150248 at Bere Alston where the crew change ends and the guard works the ground frame so there train can reverse to Calstock and Gunnislake which are on what used to be the Callington branchline. Bere Alston being on the former mainline between Plymouth and Exeter via Tavistock and Okehamption. From Calstock to Gunnislake the line climbs an impressive amount, giving lovely view across the valley. 150248 at Gunnislake, the end of the line. The current station was opened in the 1994. The Original station was across the road beyond the current buffer but was moved to allow the low bridge crossing the road to be removed. 150248 back at Plymouth. 150120 was my train back into Cornwall working 13:49 Plymouth to Penzance. 153333 & 153373 at Truro.
