RMweb Gold ngtrains.com Posted July 9, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 9, 2015 I have come across a style of capacitor that I am not familiar with Terminals are either side and the LHS in the view is marked with a black segment Is the segment denoting the pos or neg of the capacitor? smokebox
It looks as if the right hand side is positive as it appears to be connected to the blue (common positive) PCB pad. This image seems to confirm that the black marking indicates the negative.

Suzie
The marking on electrolytic capacitors normally denotes the negative. These capacitors are usually radial types with the leads bent at 90 degrees to facilitate surface mount soldering to the top of the PCB rather than in holes. They sometimes have a standoff underneath them.
Brian
100uF 25 volt SMD (Surface Mounting Device) electrolytic capacitors where the black side is negative. See this image for underside of similar capacitors...
