Gary.

I think most will agree that manufacturers sound, in general, is not up to scratch. (Hornby and Bachmann) and getting sound from a specialist supplier is the best way.

Look on YouTube for vids on sounds by Legomanbiffo and others before you decide which you like. Bear in mind that fitting sound is very must affected by the speaker and its installation.

There is plenty to read about this in these forums.

DCC on board usually means the same as DCC fitted. But it does not mean that DCC sound is fitted, if you are lucky there may be space provision for a speaker.

To convert DCC on board into DCC sound on board you will need to replace the DCC decoder with a new sound decoder and add a speaker. That will run to around £100, usually a sound fitted loco will be around £100 more than a non-fitted loco, unless you go for the Hornby TTS, which seem to be cheaper.

My first dabble into sound was Hornby's Duke of Gloucester TTS.  Not bad considering the cost, some sounds are difficult to recognize.

The chime whistle is a wow though, think I've worn it out or the grandchildren have.

This encouraged me to go one better, Sound wise.

Bought a Lok sound V4 to go in a class 66. Did not use the button type speaker, used a Bass reflex instead. Cost was £98.

All it needed to fit was to file down some of chassis block. Speaker was fitted under the fan, to encourage the sound out.

Not really necessary has its far to loud out of the box. I think CV63 controls volume.

Train-Tech do a sound module for steam & diesel £40 but you have no control over any settings.

Personally , I think diesel sound works great , primarily because in a diesel the external user can't see the associated movements or engine in action. Hence the " conceit " works and is believable. In steam , sound is merely one of the considerable " actors" that represent the realism. Hence sound without , smoke, steam , synchronised etc. in my view destroys reAsim rather then adds to it.

Just my tuppence

As someone has already suggested, I recommend you go to a model shop and ask them to take you through it. Cheltenham Model Centre sell sound equipped locos, but don't sell the sound chips separately (as far as I can see). If you have the time, I suggest you go down to Howes Models, just outside Oxford, who are one of the specialists in producing sound chips and different speakers for locos. They can explain everything to you. I have found theirs often to be the best for diesels, but it is a matter of personal choice.
