00 gauge shunting puzzle layout.

Adding water is not a quick job. whether you use layers of varnish or one of the resins, it is better to only put a little on at a time. Also best to make sure area is sealed properly, if you are using a liquid or resin. I actually use a water based green glue called I-Glu, not sure if it is still available, but as it is green , for me , it has that look of a mucky canal. It actually dries*eventually) a bit like a latex gel. The slow drying time does mean you can add rubbish that tends to end up in canals.

I will have one of my APA modules at Wakefield show in a couple of weeks.

I think IKEA must have a policy of withdrawing products that they discover are being misused for improper purposes; building model railways on them being among the worst offences.

A few years ago they did some really useful plywood boxes that had two and three drawers side by side and made very useful instant baseboards with built in stock storage but as soon as people realised that they vanished from the shops.

You mean a bit like this

If any one is interested, click on one of the photo's and scroll down and click on the album "Port Wynnstay Quayside for pictures taken of the looooong build of this layout, started 2003 and only now getting towards finished.

Hi Paul,

It's great to see your layout coming together.  The closed warehouse at the end of the line is a good idea.

How did you model the water in the canal?

Regards,

James.

Thanks James.

The water took a lot of experimenting to get the colours right dark brown with a bit green is how it ended up, then several layers of clear varnish applied. Still lots to do on the layout, going to be adding some more trees and fencing. Possibly a grounded van body to the front, then some figures. Have really enjoyed building this layout.

Regards

Paul.

Have been doing a little bit more to the layout. Made up a ratio yard crane. Still lots of small details to add.

Thanks again for all the likes and comments.

Hi Paul,

Back tracking to your photos on 10th November I notice the Kadee couplers and their magnets. Did you choose this style of magnet for a particular reason e.g. ease of installation? I am currently faffing around with Kadee under-track magnets, small neodymium magnets and these "surface" magnets on my own layout and I cannot help but think these "surface" ones are the easiest to get working.

Hi Richard,

I made the switch to Kadee couplers a few years ago and have done a lot of experimenting in regards to magnets, although under the track ones look better, I've found that the surface ones are definitely the easiest to get working. It's also really important to get the height of the couplings right. A lot of my older stock I've removed the nem pockets and used Kadee no5 couplings.

By the way I love your shelf island layout, keep up the great modelling.

Regards

Paul.

The magnets shown in the photograph are presumably the ones supplied by the coupling supplier. My understanding is they are what are called face magnets. Thus one face is North and the other South. Normal magnets bought from say a Pondshop sort of outlet are end magnets. This means that one end is North the other South. These will not operate KD couplings. The uncoupling depends on both tails being induced to the same pole and that they will then repel each other opening the coupling. For this to happen the magnet needs to be face type.

I do know, the "button" style neodymium magnets will operate Kadee couplers, but you need a pair of magnets set on edge and opposite each other between the rails. This makes spotting too difficult. I've ordered up a pack of similar magnets but bar shaped - if the magnetism is oriented the same way as button shapes (perpendicular to the end faces, so to speak) then they ought to work. I've been looking here:

At the end of the day, I can use up unused magnets in place of glue to hold down buildings, as long as I don't buy too many wrong ones! I'll write up what I find on the Shelf Island blog or topic to save veering Paul's layout topic off at a tangent.

- Richard.

Edit: I've now installed my own magnets, with some details written up on the Shelf Island blog.

Hi All, just thought I would share some new photos of my layout. Have done a little more work to the canal end. Also got round to weathering the class 05.

It all looks really nice. I especially admire the canal boat and the water and the general atmosphere. It would look "British" without a train in sight. Can we have a photo of the whole layout, no detail of course but the whole layout?

Hi all

Got the new Hornby 0-6-0 j50 BR late crest for Christmas. Have fitted it with a direct plug zen decoder. I must admit it runs beautifully at low speeds ideal for a small shunting layout like mine. Have added crew and suitable weathered.

Regards

Paul.

I really like the look of this layout which is an Inglenook plus 1 in track terms. The left hand (canal) looks very crisp. Would suggest something to the right of the halt on the backscene-some low relief factory back? to give a bit more balance to the whole thing.

Paulbb, thanks for your comment and suggestion. Have been thinking for awhile that the backscene needed something else. Have added a low relief factory to the right of the halt. Pictures below.

Great progress made. May I suggest you add the occasional figure to your layout, on the platform or in the yard maybe. Or have I missed them?

Thanks for the comment. Figures are on my shopping list when I visit the Nottingham show this Sunday. Hopefully will find some suitable ones.

Had a great time visiting the Nottingham show on Sunday. Some very inspirational layouts on display. Also managed to pick up some figures for my layout. Been busy painting them using games workshop paints.

Pictures below.
