Crafty John
We had a email from Hornby today announcing their first train set in N gauge, The set will be part of the Arnold range and consist of a german 0-6-0 diesel shunter, a couple of wagons, an oval of track with siding and buffer stop, and a controller with UK transformer. The price for all this will be under £50.00!!! Check your local model shop for more details.

Though this may not seem accurate for British N scale, it still seems to be the best and cheapest way to start out in N gauge.

Or, with the addition of some styrene sheet and ingenuity, an excellent budget starter in 009 (assuming anyone still does freelance these days). A German outline 0-6-0 diesel shunter, a couple of wagons, oval of track with siding and a power controller? Priced at something well north of £100? £50 as a retail price seems rather generous, let alone wholesale!
Crafty John
The set that we have been offered is HN1005A. The loco is obviously a budget loco and appears to have painted windows, but as others have said, this set offers a cheap entry into N Gauge and countless possibilities for narrow gauge conversions. Hroth
Its turned up on the Hornby Analogue Train Sets (amongst all the OO stuff), listed as "out of stock" and at the magnificent sum of £99.99. Looks like they're setting up a higher price before later cutting. It looks the same set as HN1004, with a different loco livery and box title ( Start Set: "Modern Private Freight Train Set" vs "Goods Train"). The loco is pretty basic, but given the cheaper price, its a good entry into N gauge and an interesting basis for narrow gauge modification.
grahame
Presumably being German outline it is Continental 'N scale 1:160' rather than British 'N gauge 1:148'. G.
RMweb Premium Neil Posted December 1, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 1, 2015 At £50 I could see it being scooped up by those wanting good cheap mechanisms for 009 projects (with lots of bonus bits) at £99 it becomes much less attractive as there are very good alternatives for both steam and diesel at a similar price. Hroth
Somewhat comedic Ye Gods! Its got the acceleration and top speed of ol' number 101 (Currently R3359)..... Perhaps the Government might be considering it as motive power for HS2?
Hroth
Browsing the "New Arrivals" on the Hornby website this morning, I saw that Hornby are offering the set for £49.99 until the 17th. How long has that been up (or down) for?
