drduncan
Can anyone outline the differences between the 40ft all third diagrams C3 and C4? Thanks drduncan
wagonman
C3 is 46'6" is long and C4 is 40'0" is long. And the C3 is 8' 6" wide whereas the C4 is only 8' 0". Because of the extra length the C3 had one more compartment...
Il Grifone
I thought the width was the difference between the C3 and the later 8 compartment third diagram? (Possibly also the bogies?). I need to check yet again......
Il Grifone
C3 & C4 both had 6'4" bogies and the 46'6" C10 was the same as the C3 but had 8'6" bogies. The C22 was the 8'6" wide form of the C10 with the mock corridor ends. As I found out checking with the usual references. The earlier C3s had 3 arc roofs with a single arc clerestory (as did C4), the later* C3, C10 and C22 had both roofs 3 arc. This generally was the march of technology - longer coaches, longer bogie wheelbase and improved roofs. GJC swept away both clerestories and the Dean bogies - the last clerestories were the 10 compartment 8' 6" wide C23 of 1904 and C25 was much the same. but with an elliptical roof. 10' bogies but no longer with Dean's suspension. * as mentioned above.
