David Todd
A brief visit today. A new kid on the block. Another crane arrived and was being assembled, looks longer and broader, than the other two. David Todd
A concrete pour, has been carried out on a third of the surface for raft 1. So markers can be painted on. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted June 4, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 4, 2016 Just as a matter of interest David. How does the level of that new concrete surface relate to the level of the railheads at the tunnel mouth. I'm just trying to get a handle on what leel the track is going to be un relation to the top of the rebar in the piles. Once again thanks very much for the photo updates. Fat Controller
I wonder if they'll cast the deck in-situ, use the lorry park as a casting site, or bring them in from an external supplier. Will the deck be pre-stressed?
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted June 4, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 4, 2016 I wonder if they'll cast the deck in-situ, use the lorry park as a casting site, or bring them in from an external supplier. Will the deck be pre-stressed? They will have to cast some of it in situ in order to concrete in the rebar. Presumably once they've cast a 'reinforced concrete girder base structure' precast units could be located onto it nut that might not be such a good idea as the interface between site cast and precast would allow possible water ingress to the structure. and presumably those big black pipes are going to be built in for draining the viaduct? In that connection I se that there are already a few places on the new flyover at Reading where water is draining out at the interface between two lots of concrete.

David Todd
Last Post. The last two,of the four holes,in this area, have brought up little chalk spoil, just loamy, sandy stuff with pebbles, so, the weakest/washed out points/voids. Hence, drilling first cylinder, then stack and drill all 3 down. My theory only. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted June 4, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 4, 2016 Thanks for those shots Dave, it looks as if the top of the concrete will be not far above the ends of the rebar that's sticking out of the piles but it will no doubt all become clearer in due course. RMweb Gold unravelled Posted June 5, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 5, 2016 I wouldn't be surprised if the rebar from the piles was going to be bent at right angles to tie in with that of the raft. I suppose one of the things determining the depth of slab might be whether the track will be slab or conventional. I was interested to see that the joggle section and ring welded into the rebar on each pile was removed. I assume it was there as part of the concrete delivery system rather than pile structure. Possibly to guard against loss of the funnel section down the hole. I an also curious about the sheathing around the top section of the rebar. Is it possible it was there to ensure that concrete contaminated with ground water and debris from the start of the pour was kept away from the rebar at the top? The nibbling of the piles would have ensured that they are back to clean concrete. Fascinating pictures as ever, I'm sure we'll se all the answers in due course. Thanks Dave
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted June 5, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 5, 2016 Another bit of musing - the newly arrived crane is much bigger than the other two which means it will cost more so there must be a reason for it. It might be that one of the others is needed elsewhere and the new one was the only available replacement but equally it might mean heavier lifts at a greater radius which might mean concrete viaduct sections on top of a site cast base? (Although I still wonder about water getting between the two.)

Night Train
image.jpeg Does anyone know why the piles aren't spaced equidistant from each other? The centre row seems offset to the left.
David Todd
Does anyone know why the piles aren't spaced equidistant from each other? The centre row seems offset to the left. Probably/possibly, from the best geo data to drill the Center piles, leaving the outer track,on more of a wing, (And a pray). From where the track is cut in the center of the site, there is a slight curve on the approach to the tunnel mouths, The up line (seaward), will have a slight dog leg to it,to line up with the seaward tunnel. You can see in this photo, the track spacing has to open up before the tunnel mouth. Unless they have re jigged, the old track work, as was all relaid in 2008, for HST 1,to Dover. [/quote I suppose it might be due to the spacing of the longitudinal timbers on the original timber viaduct. Jamie

Apparently a crew change tonight/ morning, a Dover Crew, tops the bill this week . So, you can all go on holiday after Raft 1 is set out, because, you will know what Rafts 2,3,&4 will look like. My bet is, trains running, both tracks, end of September 16, with beach work a separate entity.
