WSR S&D Gala

For some reason or another, I am not fond of 're creations" of railway events.  Things like :Last train to wherever, etc, and pretending that the WSR is the S & D.  Obviously it appeals to some and the that's good; just not for me.

As with any hobby it's down to personal taste and yes such events can get a little cheesy - as can any day out at a preserved line - this one didn't and was obviously down to a massive effort by the WSR that was amply repaid (I hope) by the full trains - unexpected on a Thursday in March I have to say. I personally don't like the WW1 and WW2 dressing up days at preserved lines complete with bangs and ambushes(although I do also have a strong interest in the history and equipment of the World Wars) so I don't go.

Having said that and what ever anyone thinks yesterday was a great opportunity to photograph a loco that I'm modelling in detail (44422); get hauled by a 7F/9F double header, see an 8F and 4MT in the flesh for the first time and eat curry sauce and chips in the sunshine.

Best

Chris

Aft'noon all,

Even by day 2 (yesterday) the WSR Spring gala was one of contrasts. The sea was being blown over the sea wall at Blue Anchor on Wednesday on an icy, overcast day but Thursday was a day of stunning blue skies & sunshine, mild temps and little wind. Here are one or two stills....I'll add a camcorder link once I've uploaded it.....

34053 Sir Keith Park looked the part in its rebuilt WC guise as 34098 Templecombe.

....the standard 4 tank was sidelined after a dramatic wheelspin at Washford yesterday with a 7F taking over its diagram....

....each of the WSR stations took on an S&D identity....Washford as Midford....Williton as Evercreech Jnc....Stogumber as Henstridge etc

We enjoyed non stop running Blue Anchor to Bishops Lydeard behind 92214 yesterday....unfortunately the WTT issued by the WSR showed it to stop at Williton, causing several to be overcarried or not picked up.

A few pictures of a lovely sunny day again today, Saturday 12th March 2016, with busy trains and stations and some great double-header combinations.

Many thanks to all at the West Somerset Railway for the Somerset & Dorset Gala - very enjoyable. Seemed very busy, too, without being stupidly crowded.

I finally saw a loco being turned at Minehead.

How lucky we are to still be able to witness sights like these in the 21st century.

The longer loop at Williton seems to help, although I'd love to know why the first train of the day had trouble leaving punctually each day.

Also, my deepest ill-wishes to the homicidal HGV driver who cut a corner on the A39 and forced me into the kerb, causing hundreds of pounds of damage to tyre, wheel and steering on my way home on Thursday...

Three from me on the Sunday. I was born seven days after closure so my birthday tends to coincide with these gala events quite nicely...

I was there for the 40th gala in 2006 and the weather was a lot nicer this time! Hats off to all the staff and volunteers for making this such

an enjoyable event.

One other thing worth mentioning, although I didn't get any pics, is that the Taunton model railway group were running a superb operating session on Bath Green Park and Tamerig Central, with frequent movements and bell code communication between operators.

Evening All,

Having got back from a week in Somerset I have now had the time to add some pictures from the Friday to my Flickr site.  If anyone would like to see them this is the first one in the Photostream :

Alternatively, they can be found in this album :

I must say that the folks on the WSR put on a really splendid show and I would like to express my thanks to all those who put in so much time and effort to create such a splendid event for the rest of us to enjoy.

  • 4 weeks later...
  • 8 months later...

The Winter Steam gala was a bit of a reprise of the previous gala. I thought it was Red timetable today, turned out I was wrong! No pictures as the light wasn't good.

My big disappointment was that the new signalling works at Williton have meant the destruction of the extensive round point rodding, replaced by point machines. Leaves very little now anywhere.
