markyb208
Hi All, As part of my layout, I'm making a TMD. It's based in the BR Sectorisation period. I would like to know what wagons would've been used as sludge wagons for the refuelling point during this period please? Regards, Mark
Mark Saunders
Hi All, As part of my layout, I'm making a TMD. It's based in the BR Sectorisation period. I would like to know what wagons would've been used as sludge wagons for the refuelling point during this period please? Regards, Mark Do you mean Sludge which I associate with Steam Depots and BR built a design of wagon with sealed side doors, whereas waste oil was moved in a variety of second hand PO tanks, the memorable ones are the ex Airfix TSV with some of them being on a circuit between depots, with this on the tank! hmrspaul
Like Mark I am a little confused by the reference to Sludge, but this collection has some of the tank wagons purchased and renumbered by BR and frequently used at TMDs in the later 1980s http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/db999xxxtank The new Bachmann anchor mounted tanks may be suitable, not necessarily renumbered as some of the ESSO and SMBP tanks were used in this way with minimal rebranding - usually just an internal user number. http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/smbpanchor http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/smbptank http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/essounfit Paul
markyb208
Hi All, Thanks for the replies and photographs Paul. I believe (though I may have misunderstood) that the storage tanks for the diesel fuel at the TMD would be flushed out every now and then to remove the impurities/gunge that would settle to the bottom of the tanks. A wagon was kept (I presume some sort of tank wagon) into which the discharge would be loaded to be removed later. I'm talking about the late 80s early 90s. I hope this is clearer, but please correct me if I am wrong. Regards, Mark
Rivercider
I photographed the Bath Road sludge tanks, as they were known locally by railwaymen, in the late 70s/early 1980s, though this was earlier than your sectorisation era request. Bath Road used ex (GWR) 6 wheel milk tanks to remove the waste oil from the depot as far as the local Kingsland Road yard for disposal by lorry, this was because, at that time there was no proper road access into the depot. I am not sure how long the pratice lasted, or when the ex milk tanks were disposed, in later years a road access into the back of the depot was made. 08218 on the local Enparts trip duty shunts sludge tanks at Bath Road, 11/79 edit - Paul Bartlett has a good photo of ADW3035 on his site, which I think was one of the tanks involved, cheers

45125
The sludge from the fuel tank was drained off and was collected from the depots drain system by the interceptor, this device collected all the waste fuel, oil etc separating the water and the oil waste before discharging the water into the local authority drainage system. The waste oil etc was then collected in fixed storage tanks or pumped into various form of rail tanks. Al Taylor.

Would you be so good as to let me know who manufactures it please? Regards, Mark

Have Heljan done them as they have in 7mm? Paul

Paul Hi Paul, Thanks for the reply, I don't think Heljan do it in 4mm, but will buy a Dapol kit and see how that turns out. Regards, Mark
