Mispressed LP - Wrong artist! Value?

Hey guys, after extensive online searching, and emailing here and there, I have drawn a total blank!

What I have is a double album set of Queens Greatest Hits - vinyl albums.

Now, side four is not what it should be, instead, it is a side from Paul McCartney and Wings!

The album press/side numbers are - PMTV-12 A 5 1 1 - for side 3 Queen, and PMTV-21 b 3 1 1 - for side 4 - Paul McCartney. You can see how the mistake was made the 21 and 12 are the error.

Anyone know where to try to find out if it is worth anything. I would think it would be collectible for either Queen fans or McCartney.

Aargh! There is such a book, that most decent public libraries keep, but its full title escapes me at present (it may well simply be "The Record Collector's Price Guide" or something like that). Martin C. Strong's "The Great Rock Discography" (Canongate Publishing) may have some pointers too. Again, the local library probably has this one too.

First Vinyl misspresses are not that uncommon, but particular examples may be.

Do not sell it in any circumstances, until multiple valuations are obtained.

Condition is critical, completeness of cover etc., promo inserts etc.

The net does provide masses of information, Queen have lists of misspresses listed, but none as described.

Value could extend from £100 to £3000 plus from the range of other examples for Queen.

Try online questionnaire forms on the misspress sites, do not reveal identity! or contact several of the stores, always saying you have had valuations from others, but are they interested?

The other tack is put it on Ebay with very fair and very complete details and photos, but put a very high reserve on it to prevent sale. Make no extravagant claims to rarity, the details will tempt the genuine buyers out.

Good luck with the search, but don't expect a high price until the buyers are hammering on the door!

Stephen.

Thanks guys. If I could ask another question or two -

I have listed the tracks by McCartney, I am not sure if I have the right titles, as I only have the audio, no notes etc.

It's a five track side -

1. Live and Let Die.

2. Just another day

3. Maybe I'm amazed.

4. Goodnight Tonight.

5. Once upon a long ago

If I have the titles wrong I would appreciate being corrected.

It would help me if I knew what album this is, and what side - A or B.

Again guys - Paul McCartney tracks

1. Live and Let Die.

2. Just another day?

3.Baby I'm a man?

4. Don't say Goodnight?

5. Tell me Darling What Does it Mean?

If I have the titles wrong I would appreciate being corrected.

It would help me if I knew what album this is from, and what side of said album - A or B.

Come on....... it's what the nets there for!!! a search shows no matching list for any McCartney albums, in that combination. You are going to have to contact an expert., a record collectors specialist to check. Being a misspress it might have involved an un-issued master being used by accident.

I know that Bertie, I checked several lists and discographies, that is why I asked on here!;)

I appreciate the help you and others are giving me, and also know that there is a font of musical knowledge out there in forum land.

It has to be from an album, otherwise the pressing would not have existed to get stuck onto the wrong other side!

Thank you all for your help.

It does not have to be from an album, at least an issued Album, they make matrixes for evaluation, test, spares, restricted foreign markets versions, limited editions, samplers, issued to trade, or to broadcasters, and a press matrix could have got swapped in the process. Paper work accompanies all pressings, but the factory floor don't know what is being pressed if the paperwork is wrong. A bit of experience here, worked for a major pressing plant years ago!

have a look on this site:

discogs

i put "queen greatest hits" in the search and clicked on search all versions of this release and it brings up all variations of the album on vinyl with the various catalog numbers, you might find it in there somewhere!!

queens greatest hits on discogs

its basically a bit like wikipedia where artist discographies are added and edited by joe public, its a fantastic resource, the only problem being it has a marketplace so it can end up a very expensive visit!

i buy all my records off there now, as well as selling some cd's, i'm rebuilding my 12" dance single collection as i sold it a few years back when i finished dj'ing without converting any of it to MP3, now i'm back into mixing with my cortex ipod mixer i'm wanting my "old school" tunes back again

Have you tried "Hard to Find Records" Jim? They're a bit pricey (but then a record is worth what anyone is prepared to pay for it) although they are mint condition. Visit htfr.com for on-line or the shop is in Brum near New Street.

Personally, I'm still keeping it real with the Technics 1210's... B)

used to use "hard to find" but discogs is fantastic and very reasonably priced if you look round and buy in bulk of the same seller to save on postage. the 2 main sellers i buy from are both less than 10 miles from me anyway so i collect from them to save even more!!

must admit i thought i wouldn't get on with the ipod mixer after years of using 1210's but its a cracker, amazing i can carry my ipod with 11000 tracks round in my pocket rather than a couple of boxes of 12" singles with maybe 150 tunes in them

gave up dj'ing when i started on the railway due to the shifts, however i am doing an "old school" set for a mate in a club soon for old times sake, boy i feel old, old school was new school when i first played them

Noticed you're from Ohio - is it a US LP? The Record Collector Rare Record Price Guide 2000 (yes, 2000) doesn't list your mispress but does list a Queen Greatest Hits LP with side 2 mispressing by Anne Murray and the rather depressing mint value of £15. Course, if you find two or more people who really want it, the value could soar.
