Scarborough Central (OO), or part of it will be at this years exhibition. Originally built nearly forty years ago by members of the Scarborough club, this model of Scarborough station, with it's iconic clock tower was in a dilapidated state when it was saved from the scrap heap by Scarborough DRM club member Dave Holland.

Dave rescued it because of his fond memories of train spotting at Scarborough in his youth. He is now restoring the layout to its former glory, including a complete rewiring.

Set in the late '60s - early '70s, the two boards on display (Buffer stops to platform ends, including the station buildings) are part of a forty ft. layout. Dave is keen to hear of the model's early history. Why not pay us a visit if you can help fill in the missing years.

Ian Harper's brilliant 'Haymarket Cross' will be making a welcome return to this year's event. The layout features around eighty locomotives being serviced and prepared on this shed layout and is a BR(E)/LNER loco. spotters dream. The track plan is based on that at Scarborough shed in the early 1960's and has recently undergone some refurbishment, including a new control system. The layout has full DCC operation and many locomotives are sound fitted, adding to the atmosphere at this busy shed.

If you are attending this year's show and want to avoid the initial crush on the ground floor, make your way to the third floor where you will find 'Haymarket Cross', along with 'Model Market' (trade) who have provided some of the components for the layout. Also in attendance (on the ground floor) is RMLectronics who provided the many yard lamps which have been shown to great effect in recent model railway publications including some very atmospheric shots by Andy York for BRM.

Club member and exhibition manager Nick Skelton (St. Cyrus and Rumbling Bridge) is showing his latest creation Lomond Street, which portrays a fictional Glasgow diesel depot in the 1980's and features his usual high standard of scenic modelling.

The back story is that this former North British steam shed has reopened on a temporary basis with the shed code LS following the partial closure of Eastfield depot after a fire, and has taken responsibility for the ED West Highland locomotive allocation including the ETHEL train heating units, the divisional manager's saloon and a 45 ton breakdown crane, all of which can be seen on shed. Locomotives from other depots visit LS from time to time for servicing and re-fueling.

When re-opening the premises it was discovered that the front wall of the shed had subsided, hence the supporting buttress.

The layout features full DCC control and sound fitted locomotives, but do look out for Nick's trade mark cameo scenes that really bring the layout to life.

The recent addition of a beautifully painted backscene by fellow club member Richard Bannister enhances the atmosphere and gives the layout a feeling of real depth.

Lomond Street can be seen on the ground floor of this year's show.

Once again Glenngary Tramway will be the first layout on view at this year's exhibition. I cannot think of another dedicated funicular railway on the show circuit, although I did see an example of one on an N gauge layout at Doncaster this year, and the new North of England Line (2) layout (also in N) will feature an exquisite example by Geoff Britton when it appears on the show circuit in the not too distant future.

The Glenngary tramway is based on the Scarborough's Victorian tramways that still carry passengers from the beach to the town to this day, and has undergone some recent refurbishment. It is one of two layouts at this year's show that can be operated by the visiting public. (The other is our Thomas layout) Unlike the aforementioned N gauge examples, this one is a big one at 1:32 scale, so carries real presence and lots of detail including little groups of uniquely detailed character passengers and it's own feature lighting.

Builders and operators Gary and Dianne will be happy to discuss the layout, how it was built and how it actually works, as well as the history of funicular railways in general.

Haymarket Cross all set up and ready to go, it's amazing after standing for a few months how the 'gremlins' turn up! thankfully they were sorted quickly apart from one of our most used turnouts breaking. Thanks to Geoff Ford for coming to the rescue and doing a temporary repair which we hope will get us through the weekend.

Good luck to all the exhibitors have a 'good un'

Thank you to all our exhibitors, demonstrators, traders and show makers that made this year's event such a resounding success. It proved to be another record year in terms of people through the door, and the final figures do not include children who gained free entry this year. Railway modelling seems to be as popular as ever in the Scarborough area.

This year’s  Scarborough and District Railway Modellers Annual show proved to be very busy for Dianne and I on the Glenngary Tramway Stand. The number of “ I drove the trams “ cards issued rising from around 150 last year to just over 200 this time .

As usual the Pork and apple pies provided by the catering team were in great demand!!

A video of this year’s event is now available below
