sdw7300
Aaaaarrrrhhh! One of the MXA wagons will have black under chassis. I sprayed one coat of Phoenix Matt Black but it needed a second. Last night I thought I'd just give it a quick blast with some Matt Black Acrylic Lacquer rattle can rather setting up and cleaning the airbrush. And this was the result...... I managed to wipe most of the black off with cotton buds. I'll check how bad it looks tonight..... Edited January 6, 2017 by sdw7300
Jack374
Aaaaarrrrhhh! Unlucky! I had this with a HEA coal wagon, and I had to sand it down and repaint. I sprayed Humbrol varnish over some Railmatch paint...won't be doing that again! Let's hope it's not too bad! Jack.

Thanks Jack - thankfully the primer stayed on whilst I wiped most of the black paint off. A spray of Phoenix matt black and it's looking OK (given it's not really going to be seen).
sdw7300
Always an exciting moment, peeling the layers of masking tape off a model to reveal the final paint job. I did this 67015 and 60011 last night..... with mixed results. The 67 is looking great: The 60, not so. The masking tape has pulled away a large chunk of red. I think any kind of patch up job would look rubbish so it's back to the stripping bath for this one...... What's even more annoying is I'm almost out of DBS Red so will need to wait until a show to get some. (My local model shop doesn't stock Phoenix paint). One step forward, two steps back.....
dj_crisp
One step forward... one sideways. It happens to me no matter how careful I am. Your 67 does look great though. For matt black I've had excellent results with Halfords rattle cans which save me getting out the Airbrush. Will
RMweb Premium James Makin Posted January 10, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 10, 2017 Ouch, Sam! I'd reckon that could be saveable by just stripping back the top layer of red on that side and dusting over a new layer, stripping the whole body right back sounds like far too much hassle haha! I find varnish will hide all sorts of sins, if the area stripped back was any smaller or on a roof/corner area I'd honestly brush paint in the remainder, but those slab sides don't make it easy!! Thanks Will & James I think i'll try the careful selective sand / strip approach first. If it's rubbish I can always fully start again. I'm not sure what's caused it though. My garage is freezing and whilst I try to remember to bring the bodies and paint in the house to warm before spraying I might not have before the first coat of red. Still, you live and learn. big T
Hi Sam, Shame about the 60 mate. Hang in there! On the plus side, the 67 looks great! I always have trouble with varnish. No matter what I do, careful prep, ,multiple layers of paint etc, I always get a reaction, be it a misty coat, bubbling or orange peeling. Ive been told that its the temperature of the liquid and surrounding air temp when spraying or the age of the varnish itself. eek. Best of luck mate Trev
sdw7300
I managed to get away with patching the cl60 using the last bit of DBS red paint I had, phew... Also added some of the black detailing on the cl67. I spent over an hour making the window frames followed by less than 30 seconds with the airbrush! Not perfect but better than I could do freehand. Finally a view of the top of the radiator in my kitchen All have now had a coat of Humbrol Clear ready to start on transfers. Cheers for reading.
sdw7300
Progress has been slowed by a new (non-train related) toy! Built from a laser cut ply & MDF kit. I find it mesmerising to watch now it's up and running. Anyway, back to the model railways.... I want to add lights to the locos so rigged up a test set up with some pre-wired SMD LED's A piece of 3mm foam board was glued inside the body and the holes drilled out. I've used black-tac to hold the LED's in place as it allows a certain amount of repositioning and stops light bled. Looking at pic's online the class 60's seem to run with one marker light and the opposite headlight in daylight mode and the opposite combination for night running. I want to use the Hornby TTS decoders (once available for the cl. 60 & 67) which have basic directional lighting functions. I'm hoping the combination of the TTS decoder, a simple double pole double throw switch and a couple of diodes should allow me to replicate day/night running lights. On to the Lobster Boxes. Railtec Transfers applied so these are nearing completion. Just cosmetic a coupling hook and a brake air pipe at each end to go. Cheers
sdw7300
The MXA are pretty much complete! Cosmetic coupling hook and single airline added to each end I quite like the fact there is a fair bit of variation between the prototypes - I have tried to capture some of that between these two wagons. sdw7300
Thanks Muddy. I'm away on business at the moment. I'll measure & report back when I get back at the weekend. Back now. Hope this helps! Box based on the BDA deck (being 206x32mm). The sides are 15mm high. 1mm thick plasticard for the walls, 2mm for the base. 1.5mm square bar for all the supports and ribs. Start with the middle one then 15.5mm space either side. Edited February 17, 2017 by sdw7300
muddy water
That is wonderful! It is great when people like you think outside of the'box' and make something a bit different. There must be more different wagons out there to build which are not rtr. Now we are stuck with just class 66 locomotives, we need different trains to pull! I agree they're mainly pulled by 66's but a quick Flickr search shows examples of MXA's being pulled by class 37, 60, 68 & 70. I should be able to tick three of the 4 boxes when (or if !?!) my DCC fitted 68 arrives.
sdw7300
60011 is now finished! (I have touched up the weathering on the exhaust since taking these photos!) I've added directional lighting which can be switched between day-time and night-time running modes using a tiny switch mounted in the fuel tanks You can just about make out the switch immediately to the left of the bogie I've wired in a 8 pin DCC decoder socket. Plenty of room to fit the Hornby TTS sound decoder and speaker once released later this year! Cheers
sdw7300
Sorry for the delay between updates, holiday and work getting in the way of modelling! 67015 is progressing slowly. Lighting added using prewired smd LED's. For this one I've the lights to the chassis rather than the body, with 1mm, 1.5mm and 2mm fibre optic light guides in the body. Test run of the lights Then with the body on I've wired in a switch so you can choose between day and night mode This way of adding lights has led to more light bleed than I'd have liked. I may revisit this at a later date but I've had enough of soldering fumes for a while! Next up, transfers (including getting the big DB Schenker one to sit over the ribs). sdw7300
Finally finished 67015. The Railtec transfers went on a treat and a bit of gentle manipulation with a stiff paint brush and a good soaking of Humbrol decal fix got them sitting well over the ribs. I've given her a bit of weathering, perhaps could do with a bit more along the bottom edge... Anyway, a couple of pics Hope you like it! sdw7300
I was on the train to Euston with my boys a couple of months back and we spotted a DRS Thunderbird at Rugby. My eldest asked if I could paint one so. Thought I'd have a crack at 57306. The donor was a Bachmann First Great Western model. Paint and decals from R3sprays and dellner couplings from Precision. Always a worry chopping into a body shell, but the dellner coupling housing has gone in a treat I wanted to keep the roof colour and stainless grills so rather than a total paint strip, I just used 1200 grit, then 1500 grit wet and dry to take the previous livery off the sides. The roof was carefully masked then the body was primed. The yellow ends had four coats of paint then were masked before two coats of DRS blue followed by a coat of Humbrol Clear ready for the massive decals. The decals will have to wait as a week digging holes on the beach with the boys beckons! Edited May 25, 2017 by sdw7300
sdw7300
A bit more progress on the Thunderbird to report. Main DRS swoosh transfers and then loads of smaller warning transfers added over the last week or so. All coated in varnish to seal but I forgot to take any photos! This weekend's efforts included improving the lighting. The Bachmann class 57 chassis came with red rear marker lights but is missing the lower white forward marker lights. I think there is enough room to add a couple of tiny SMD led's to the face of the lighting board to correct this. I superglued two brilliant white SMD LED's and an SMD resistor to a piece of plasti-card which made them a lot easier to solder up. Tracing the wiring back to the PCB, I have used the contention points for the top headlight. By adding a 330 ohm resistor it balances the two marker lights and top light so they all work and are not too bright. Forwards Reverse Hopefully I can reassemble and finish painting up the delner coupling this week.
sdw7300
And the repaint and detailing of 57306 is finally finished.... Bogie hubs and springs painted then a bit of very light weathering added as she seems so be kept very clean. (And the lighting works!) I painted up the dellner coupling then debated whether to add a cover. Flickr seems to show about both with or without covers in equal measures so I went for without. Right, I must get on with the P-Way yard on the layout now..... Cheers
