Earlswood Nob
Good morning all Is there a list of LMS (inc constituents) locos that were painted in the crimson lake livery post 1928. I have read somewhere that locos with a power classification of 5P and above were painted crimson. However, this would mean that classes like the L&Y Highflyer atlantic would have been relegated to black livery. Another problem would be the L&Y Dreadnoughts. The early locos were 3P, and the rebuilds and later locos were 5P. Did any of them qualify for crimson? Any answers or discussion would be appreciated. Steamport Southport
It's quite a complex subject. The best place to look is in An Illustrated History of LMS Locomotives by Jenkinson and Essery, particularly Part One which has a section on liveries. I haven't got my copy at hand though. Looking at Railway Liveries 1923 - 1947 by Brian Haresnape it states Passenger livery; Second period 1928 - 1939 "The main body colour remained the same but the number of locomotive types using it was now restricted to the more important and modern" Then at the bottom of the page it gives the list. "The locomotives selected were the non-streamlined 4-6-2s, Royal Scots, Patriots, Jubilees, Claughtons, ex L&YR (Hughes) 4-6-0s and ex MR Compounds". Earlswood Nob
Thanks Jason You have answered my question. I shall keep my eyes open for a copy of Jenkinson & Essery's book. Earlswood nob
