Mucky Duck
Hi Neil, this is a nice litle layout but the colour balance of your images could be a lot better. I hope you don't mind me playing around with a couple… They are by no means perfect but I think it helps your work look even more impressive.

mason
hi all, as per my previous posts i thought i would give a small desription of things that have been done and briefly how. I have also added some new pics to help things along. ok first is the depot building, this was made using wills box profile sheets backed onto thin plastic sheets, the girder supports are plastic draw runners from a double bed, the flooring is also plastic sheeting. this shows the interior of the depot which can be seen through the windows of the depot, the office is again wills box profile, with a couple of Bachmann maintenance men hard at work the signal box is a plastic Dapol kit, i gave the box a floor and an interior made from scraps of plastic, painted inmidland colours, also i made a small raised flower bed just to keep the signal man busy. the brick walling surrounding the knightwing fuel point is some slaters sheets and the girder bridge is some spare plastikard and some evergreen girder off cuts. most of the main greenery is basket liner with rubberised horse hair bushes dipped in pva and mixed green flocks. all the pipe work around charlie street is off cut sprue and odd plastic bottles from my daughters unused baby kits hehehehe, you have to find what you can these days hahaha. the next few pics are of some of my weathered stock that can be seen around charlie street. thanks for looking at charlie street, please feel free to leave thoughts and comments regards neil

mason
hi all, took a couple of shots of the knightwing fuel point, basically went away from the instructions and chopped the base up and laid the grills across the back wall upto the fuel container made from box profile and wills brick wall and a few prues for pipes. also a night shot ( not a very good one ) of the lighting in the depot building, really have to get some yard lighting, any suggestions on what style or manufacturers would be best??? few pics regards neil
mason
quick update, a new lighting rig has been aquired today, pretty much a bargain too, went to the local carboot and saw a brand new boxed kitchen light unit which fixes to the underneath of cupboard units to light your work top, 3 small halogen light units incased in a small unit, still sealed up, asked the owner and £1.50 later, yes folks £1.50..SOLD straight home and removed the enourmous flouresent unit i was using and fashioned some wood blocks ( very heath robinson, but ok for now ) for the unit to be supported on above the layout. the results are farily good and i will add some pics as soon as i get the L brackets to support it permantly but just goes to show bargains can be had on all sorts of things, i thought it was going to be a pocket drainer for a nice light unit. also today iv sourced some lighting for the actual layout too, the express models lighting units that will fit on the rear wall either side of the fuel point and one either end of the depot buildings. iv also looked at point rodding parts from wizard models, to give the layout a more detailed look, im not to sure on signalling for the layout, if ground sinals would be used or aspect lights so im open to suggestions on those. please feel free to point things out that i could have done or shouldnt have done for that matter regards neil
mason
as per my previous post here is a few pics of the £1.50 carboot lightunit, its needs mounting alot better and possibly slightly higher to reduce the brightness at the front but you cant complain for the price i paid. regards neil
JackBlack
Nice lighting there Neil. Any chance for the track plan?
mason
thanks jack, ill see what i can do about a track plan, i did a sketch that i posted on the first page of this thread, but that isnt totally upto date. thanks for the comment hopefully some new shots of more detail being added over the coming week. regards neil
RMweb Gold mudmagnet Posted July 6, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 6, 2010 Good looking layout there Neil. The arch and lighting frame the layout nicely, drawing you into the scene.
mason
thanks for the kind comments mudmagnet, iv never framed a layout like this so im glad it had an effect in the way it has, i was a little unsure about the lighting but it seems to look better every time i switch it on, i still need to fix it properly with some L shaped brackets and raise it slightly higher as there seems to be a fe shadows towards the back of the layout and give a more fluid light output. the other thing on my next to do list is the control panel, which is at the moment alot of wires bundled together out the side of the layout with switches and power leads. the plan is to make a detachable control panel which will just clip in and out when not in use, this will eventually be taken out once the layout goes to dcc later this year. thanks for the great comments regards neil
mason
had a little mess around with some stock tonight and thought id get the camera out, im still not happy with the overhead lighting and ill probably move it more centrally to distribute the light more evenly. please leave me some feedback on things and how they look or things i could add to enhance he layout. regards neil
oggy1953
Hi, You wanted suggestions, Already looks great, but maybe dirty up the ballast to give it that old, worn, grimey look. Hope that helps..
mason
thanka oggy, i totally agree, looking back through the pics it does look alittle clean, iv got a tin of underframe dirt i might dilute and wash over areas and add a little rust and a bit more weedage here and there, thanks for the suggestions its good to get another input thanks again neil
mason
hi all, finally got time for an update, no pics yet but some will follow in the next few weeks. since the last pics iv been pretty busy on charlie street. the layout lighting is all finished, 2 eckon yard lights sit in the middle of the yard with 2 small lights in the ware house yard to the left corner o the layout, another on the front of the depot building, behind the fuel point and in the signal box. the results are better than i expected, at first they where very bright, but after a little tinkering with some old mobile phone chargers the lighting looks alot more realistic, the phone charger acting as a transformer. iv also as suggested by oggy weathered the tack a little more and added a bit more clutter around the yard and the waste land area in front of the depot building. the future for charlie street is looking good with a spot at the Mansfield exhibition next year instead of taking pilot road. After a lot of thought i decided that i need a portable fiddle yard to be able to run larger locos into the fuel point and to be able to keep a little stock readily available instead of rooting in boxes every other movement. fortunatly most of my layouts are virtually built to the same size, mainly due to the restrictions on space in our house, and i still had the boards left over from deeping clay which never got finished, so a bit of sawing and hacking i have a small 1ft fiddle yard that when finished will bolt onto the end of charlie street once the layouts end panel is removed, the end panel will be put back when the layout is back at home. i have the electrics and track alligning to sort out and then the next job is to build the portable leg units for the main section and the fiddle yard. hope to get some pics on soon regards neil
Poindexter
Excellent use of a small space. Cant wait to see the updates. Guy

Hope they look ok, please feel free to leave any comments Charlie street is available for any exhibitions and is currently down to be at the next mansfield show in march 2011 still lots of finer details to add and a small additional fiddle yard to finish that can be added if the space is available. regards neil
mason
Hi all, not much in the way of updates at the moment, only work that has been going on is weathering and detailing of stock for the Mansfield show in March 2011.. I have also completed the fiddle yard extension and the support legs for the whole layout, the legs were constructed form 2x2 timber making legs to stand the layout t about 1mtr high, with bracings top and bottom of the legs fitted with hinges to allow them to fold up for ease of transportation and all held in place with coach bolts and wing nuts. Very Traditional leg system and very sturdy and simple...why make life hard.. i will post photos of the finished article. cheers neil

mason
Hi all thank you to all that have commented on charlie street and all that came and said hello at the show in Mansfield. unfortunatly my new project is giving my wallet a bashing so somethings got to give. so Charlie street is now up for sale on the new Rmweb Market Place this layout has been a fantastic pleasure to build and run and has really been a learning curve from building my last project Pilot road. I really hope this layout can go to a good home and hopefully see more of it on here. Thanks again Neil
mobi323
hi all, after the dissapointment of having to put my other layout Deeping Clay up for sale due to space constraints and the upcoming arrival of our baby boy, neil Couldn't you have let the new boy go and kept the Deeping Clay layout!!! This is a joke. Don't report me.
mason
No offence taken mate  Charlie street is no sold pending collection. Cheers Neil
Guest jim s-w
Hi Neil A little feedback if you don't mind. My only real thoughts are 1 if you plan to make the new layout mult-period think about making a few items swappable. The high viz people, wheelie bins etc don't really fit with claytons. If you drill a little hole in the feet you can fit them into holes in the baseboards. 2 watch your textures are to scale. The ballast is too chunky and the texture on the shed roof is way OTT. Yes it is chippings in real like but does it look like it in model form. Often using similar materials doesn't look right on a model. For example if you use real sand on a model of a beach it looks like an assault course. A better alternative would be one of the textured paints you can get from DIY sheds. mason
Hi Jim thank you for the great observations and tips, these have all been carried over and considered with my current project deeping lane depot and the ballast has been made finer and i have steered away from adding thick chunky ballast to roofs and no more claytons on this layout everything should be in keeping with the era. im sure there are things on the new project that are to much or to little and its advice like yours that help other less accomplsihed modellers do well, your work is extremely impressive having read alot on here and seen portions in the flesh and i take every project i work on as a learning curve . thanks for the comments and help Charlie street was sold back in april to a lovely chap who i know has given it a good home. Thank you to all who have commented and helped along the way please have a look at my new project Deeping Lane Depot Cheers Neil
