Axlebox Posted September 21, 2016 Share Posted September 21, 2016 Its that time of year again when the good folk either side of the border put down their weapons and gather in the village hall at Stannington, Northumberland, to celebrate all that is good with the world of finescale modelling. Whilst Workshopwise is run by the NE & Borders area group of the EM Gauge society, all are welcome whatever you scale/gauge combination. There will be an abundance of demonstrators, a gaggle of finescale layouts and the charms of Doctor Dave Dunn and his never ending slide show from the archives of the Armstrong Trust. If thats not enough to tempt you out of your armchair, then there is the catering...which is of an even better standard than the models on dispaly...don't take my word for it, come and try the bacon butties in the morning and the cakes in the afternoon. Also present will be Tynedale Trains, Smart Models, the extraordinarily good people from Lanarkshire models and our cousins from the Cumbrian Railways Association. You're right about the car park. Big innit. Free as well which has to be unusual in this day and age. https://goo.gl/maps/fbjEfHHKRns The omnibus stop is also a bit unusual, not for the absolute lack of obligatory graffiti but for services heading in both the north and south direction stopping at the self same (northbound) bus shelter! Another advantage is the venue lies only a few yards from the main London to Edinburgh highway which can also come in useful if you are also travelling from Edinburgh to London. I sometimes think that, at least as far as finescale modellers are concerned, events such as this and the recent 101 Not Out will eventually replace conventional exhibitions. Quite a few folk class Manchester as being in the North and quite grim. Stannington is most certainly in the north and it lies on the Great North Road. Some use condition of local bus shelters (if they haven't been demolished) as an indicator of griminess. The all new model shop in Morpeth is down a side alley, just around the corner from the cheese shop, its small with limited stock but very friendly staff and has the basics (paint, glue etc) https://www.facebook.com/Jandjmodels/ The micropub by the bridge is the brewery tap for Acton Ales...for research purposes I have tried the 3 Acton ales on offer and they do have a house 'style' which my partner described as 'biscuity'...there were 6 ales on offer of which 5 were 'golden' ales. https://whatpub.com/.../office-morpeth I could get into this research thing, next stop the cheese shop... Like John I managed to play trains for a bit aswell and then spent the rest of the day watching Dr Dave Dunn's film show, whilst eating some of the best cake to have graced an exhibition kitchen.
