Poor Old Bruce
50 years ago today, on 4th march 1967, Pendennis Castle took a special train from Didcot to Chester and back. Here are some photos taken a week before when Pendennis was steamed for a run round the triangle.
Poor Old Bruce
Sorry to do this in bits but my connection keeps dropping out, so th speak. Here are some of the few shots I took on oMarch 4th. The morning of the 4th was somewhat duller than the previous weekend. Leaving Shrewsbury. Suffice to say that attitudes were somewhat more relaxed in those days. jonny777
On the same day as that was happening further west, I was trying not to freeze while sitting on a bridge over the GN&GE through the early morning. The main lure on Saturday mornings was the Doncaster to March ECS working which conveyed newly outshopped DMU cars on the rear, which were easy to spot from a distance because they were in bright blue livery by this time. 4th March 1967 was no exception as D6809 was in charge with E51007 and E79508 at the rear. D1704 was on a Warsop Junction to Whitemoor coal train and D6728 on the Harwich to Manchester boat train. I also saw D6712, D6726, D6744, D5586, D5514 and D1728 before cycling home for a bowl of Shredded Wheat.
'CHARD
The particular reason for this railtour with 4079 was, IIRC, to celebrate the Didcot - Chester line as a through route before it lost its main line status a couple of days later, when Snow Hill closed to express traffic and the ex-GW main line was broken in Birmingham. RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted March 4, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 4, 2017 And iirc was 4th march not the end of steam between Shrewsbury and Chester and also to Aberystwyth? Did Shrewsbury effectively close as a steam depot that day?

RMweb Premium Andy Kirkham Posted March 4, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 4, 2017 The red frames of 4079 are eye-catching, but presumably they were entirely fanciful.
Poor Old Bruce
The red frames of 4079 are eye-catching, but presumably they were entirely fanciful. They were indeed. AFAIK they were the work of Mike Higson, the first preservation owner. Here are two more photos taken 50 years ago today, 5th March 1967, when Pendennis went light engine from Didcot to Tyseley to be in the background of a Cuneo painting of Clun Castle. sp1
I know that the pictures were over twenty years after the fact, and colour reproduction from old photos is subjective, but I wish Hornby would have a look at the green in some of those photos...... Pobrien
I hitchhiked from Bristol to Oxley, Wolverhampton, on March 4, 1967, to see the "Castle" specials. This is 4079 Pendennis Castle https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/6525975207/in/photolist-SrvqoB-BxyjL6-yhMi3q-egMYYQ-cBx1Sf-b4bBoM-aWFk4V-aeB8nV-9nY33F This was also the day that Oxley (2B) closed to steam. Here are two views of the shed. https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/6061179065/in/photolist-Rfta2x-KbgCct-HCFHV6-qKraVT-pwExqg-pwExqr-g3Eg3S-ce73jf-aWFk4V-aWFkaM-aiQxvJ-aeB8nV-aeB8nk-9SnKup-9o26nw-95THu4-95THiK https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/6061179099/in/photolist-Rfta2x-KbgCct-HCFHV6-qKraVT-pwExqg-pwExqr-g3Eg3S-ce73jf-aWFk4V-aWFkaM-aiQxvJ-aeB8nV-aeB8nk-9SnKup-9o26nw-95THu4-95THiK

EddieB
All of which pales into insignificance on the day that Queens Park Rangers overcame West Bromwich Albion to become the first third division side to win the Football League Cup.
