Brambleford Layout - Retaining wall

Yes I can expect the crane will be used a lot and is like new. The Mk2 coaches (I think they are MK2’s) only just fit on the layout.

The Deltic needs a little bit of love I don’t think it has been used for 20 years but it is nothing that a little bit of tlc can’t fix. It is great to have more rolling stock to play with.

I see you have a Deltic. My brother has one just like that - it used to drink loads of oil and the wheels used to be dirt magnets but he gave it a huge service 2yrs or so ago and since then it's been as good as impeccable. You might want to service yours, especially if it hasn't done anything for 2 DECADES...

Thanks Tug,

I have taken all the wheels off the bogies and cleaned them as well as the clip on the slave bogie.

I have fitted a decoder and I will give the motor and gears a once over tomorrow.

I have been thinking of getting a few lighting kits from express models for the Class 55 and 47 has anyone had a experience with them?

Thanks

Ok, so This is just an idea for a improved layout once we have moved.

I still haven't worked out where I might position a fiddle yard I might try and raise the whole layout as it is currently low and have a fiddle yard on a lower level.

Realised last night after I posted this that I have made a big mistake and the new room is not this shape. I need to rotate the layout by 90% and the recess in the wall is in the corner.

I though that expanding the layout would be fun but it is very stressful, in one hand it is exciting as you get more spare to play with but on the other hand I have put lots of work in the current layout I want to keep most of it and we have so may ideas they will not all work together.

I may plan a simple extension to this layout and then maybe plan something else later...

We have been discussing the lack of tree so I purchased a box of Gaugemaster seafoam trees

1st impressions are that there are a lot in the box but they seem a very fragile and brittle.

A lot are bent so I have been soaking them in water and hanging them to dry with a weight on them

Then the possess

  • Remove all the loose and unwanted leaves

  • Paint then Brown

post-31637-0-72405300-1521467481_thumb.jpg

  • Cover them in course flock

post-31637-0-72948500-1521467483_thumb.jpg

  • finish them with a matt lacquer

I always fancied a helix to a lower level fiddle yard. For about £50 it looks quite easy https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Model-Railway-Helix-Kit-00-gauge/282382269004?hash=item41bf4b7a4c:m:mDX5iAxNZG5FeCHJZMdjLRQ and make a lot more of any space I had. If you had two, then you'd also have a really long run, but maybe that's getting carried away!

Hi Scott, yes I did think of some thing like this and it is still in the back of my head. I think the cost of a helix would work out a little more than £ 50 as it is to get 2 1/2 loops, an entry and exit would be £ 119 which is what you would need plus I would need 2, 1 at each end it might work out cheaper to make your own that way you would be able to tailor it to your own use.

Thanks

Nick

Even if you built your own, it's not going to be cheap. But the kids will love the trains going round and round and round. Also gives a much longer run off and on scene.

It's the access underneath the main board that always bothered me. You need to make sure it's super clean as trains could easily get stuck and you really don't want a derailment.

Yep the other issue I have at the moment is that our layout is only 700mm high this is for the kids but kills my back...

I have fitted some very small but effective lights to the station and the goods shed but they are very hard to see in the day light, except for the out side lights on the station which are tiny but look great.

I will have to take some night time photos.

There also seems to be a conga line out side the good shed

Very nice, small but very nice.  Are these home made or bought?

Once you enter the world of lighting you will realise you need lights inside those dark buildings, then you will realise that you need interiors!!!  That's is why my building kit construction had ground to a halt as I need to wire in the lights and create some form of interior.  My Metcalfe small factory kit with three floors is still in flat form!

As for the Village People or is that the Full Monty at the dole office?

Hi Paul,

I know now I have put lights in the station you can see the holes and wires for the lights and lack of interior. The Good shed has an internal platform and I have put a tool box in there but it will need more..

I have been looking at the temporary retaining wall and thought it was about time I made an effort to finished it.

I have downloaded a kit from scalescene and I am now putting it together. But I to do the kit justice I will have to get the saw out and remodel the top board so that I can hide it with the new wall. I am also continuing the wall around the return and I aim to have the track coming out from an arch.

Here are some before photos and the progress so far.

Ignore the workshop this was a free kit from Scalescene that I built to see how they go together I am not sure where it will go yet.

All these big supports will have to be removed and replaced with smaller supports.

I have nearly got to the point where I need to rework the baseboard and the bridge mountings before I can test fit.

I haven’t had much time to get out in to the cabin this weekend but I have made a start. Who knew it would be so difficult to straighten up the tracks and remove 5mm from the front of the top board.

I have made the new smaller supports and cut half the top section. I hope to get some time tomorrow afternoon to finish the boards and start to relay the track.

  • 1 month later...

It’s been a while since I posted. I have been doing little things with the layout a few more buildings and lots of running. But today marked a big change we are moving soon and I could not put this off anymore.

There was no way the layout was ever going to move in 1 section so it needed to be broken down.

I was able to split the section with minimal damage.
