Surava colors

Recommended Posts

I need some opinions of the color of gutters and downspouts on the Surava Bahnhof.  Are they painted an orange color or are they rusty?  And it appears that the roof over the ticket office is a galvanized metal.

I hope I am within the forum rules by just posting a link and not the pictures.

Thanks,

Kevin

I don't have any photos of Surava but I have had a look through my photos taken on the RhB taken between 1988 and 1997 on holidays in Switzerland.

Guttering is usually either grey or brown, the inside of gutters are often grey (bare metal?) when the outside is brown.  The brown paint can look a bit orange when it is well weathered, but usually is closer to a fairly dark wood colour (i.e. it almost matches the buildings).

Sometimes there is some rust, but that is not common.

I have seen stations where the guttering and downpipes appear to be unpainted copper but cannot find any RhB photos, it may have been on another railway.

Some of my photos appear to show roofs which look like galvanised steel or similar coloured metal.

There are quite a lot of photos on the RhB scattered through my thread of European railway photos, at:

There are also some of my flickr site, the RhB ones are scattered through the albums.  Links below to the most relevant albums.

Hope they are some use.

It looks brown in a lot of photos but a lot of handrails do on their bridges and that's definitely surface rust. Have a look at railpictures.net and search

Country - Switzerland

Keyword - RhB

And it's best to select 'photos only' and '90 to a page'

I have been doing a lot of searching and I think that has added to my confusion.  I think I am seeing these buildings at different stages of weathering and repair.  The downspouts on my Kibri kit are a reddish orange and they just do not look right.  The plastic color of some of these kit parts are rather garish.  I'm painting the kit hoping to improve the looks.

This has to be the most helpful forum I have ever been on.

Thanks again,

Kevin

Guess what - I was there last September in lovely sunshine

the downpipes are definitely surface-rusted (I think) light steel. I've seen new downpipes on equivalent stations and it is bright grey like new steel, but once aged it seems to goes rusty

Gordon, thank you for posting these photos.  As you can see I compromised on the downspout colors and went with a slightly rusty brown.  I'm not completely pleased with the final colors of the whole building.  I have never been good with colors.  I need to lighten the concrete and work on the stone colors yet.

I use Heiki concrete paint and also their asphalt. I bought mine in Basel many years ago and it seems to last forever. I have to thin it every now and again. Basically you brush it on then lightly sand it to get the finish. For wood you could try Pan Pastels - they are great for weathering as you can get some subtle effects and if you make a complete "pig's ear" you can wipe them off. Ideal for things that don't get handled much.
