Today we went on an enjoyable one-hour harbour cruise from the National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour.

Our steed was one of the Sydney Heritage Fleet's vessels, MV Berrima from 1955.

After passing under the Harbour Bridge, we saw this floating block of flats being bunkered by ICS Reliance.

There's not much true commercial shipping left on Sydney Harbour, but on the north side Akuna was inbound although the sun was in the wrong place for a photo. I did catch her, from a distance as she was berthing at White Bay, close to Pioneer.

Back at Darling Harbour, we passed the replica of Captain Cook's Endeavour before berthing, just in time to walk up the road for Sunday roast at a pub overlooking the harbour.

Where does it go for maintenance and is there any video footage of that?

I assume you mean Berrima?

Normally in Rozelle Bay shipyard, where the Sydney Heritage Fleet is based, but heavier work is done under contract by a shipyard in Berry's Bay.

I'm not aware of any footage but a search of Sydney Heritage Fleet might turn up something.

I came across this on Youtube , not a ship but a different take on propulsion .

I will post as a link as a tease .

I loved the relaxed lifestyle there. Very tempting!

...but the "boating" was brill too. So effortless.

I loved the super long Dip Stick, the bottle on the exhaust, and the efficient way they "seesawed" the motor bike off at the other end.

The safety looked well catered for - at least there were life-jackets a plenty!

The engine looked well maintained and tended. Clearing the Prop would be a doddle!

Did you see how many "views" that video has!!

Thanks Mike for posting that. Very therapeutic.

Kev.

Alas, it appears even the sensible German's have embraced the obsession for daubing garish paint schemes on cruise ships.

Did someone ask what was painted on the stern?

Not technically an outboard motor, I suppose !

I would say it meets the definition exactly .

 From Wiki,

An outboard motor is a propulsion system for boats, consisting of a self-contained unit that includes engine, gearbox and propeller or jet drive,

They’ve been like that for a while . We had one follow us on a Royal Caribbean. We had a nickname for it , the XXXXX of the Seas , which it won’t allow me to type here , owing to the tadpole like thing along the hull ( it rhymes with perm)

It's too good to not be true.

In an extraordinary response to the ongoing issues with Scotland’s CalMac ferry fleet, the Ministry of Defence has announced that the Royal Navy’s HMS Bulwark will be temporarily repurposed for ferry duties.  This unconventional solution aims to ease the pressure on Scotland’s transport network, ensuring that essential services continue to run smoothly and island communities stay connected.

I remember this one when she was named by Princess Diana in Southampton as 'Royal Princess', that was 1984. I am getting old. This was one of the few cruise ships I quite liked, less lego brick than newer cruise ships.

A bunker barge waiting to go alongside the cruise ship Artania. The barge is critical, because of lifeboat overhang the bunker vessel needs to be kept away from the cruise ship side, hence the barge will be placed between the two. Whether it is needed depends on the air draught of the bunker vessel, but those used in Singapore tend to be quite big (they're more coastal tanker than the sort of bunker barges used in Europe).

Yes, she has nice curved lines - rather like many real Royal Princesses...

Where are heading to?

I honestly don't know,  given the size (they're both in the ultra-large category) they're almost certainly operating one of the East-West services between Europe and East Asia  (China, maybe Japan). Pasir Panjang is the main container terminal of Singapore, it has about 44 berths and can handle the biggest box boats in service or projected, it's huge. The other terminals are Tanjong Pagar/Brani (strictly speaking two terminals opposite each other but most just say Tanjong Pagar) and the new mega port at Tuas. Tanjong Pagar is closing and only the Brani Island side is a working container terminal now with the Tanjong Pagar side now used occasionally as a lay by berth and the vehicle terminal still being very busy. Eventually I think the intention is to move everything to Tuas.
