Thread drifting

We are good at it here - I am as guilty as any - so could we make a game of it in this thread and use up all our driftiness here  to avoid annoying those who would rather like to stay firmly on topic, "Thank you, that will be all Corporal Jones."? All site rules apply, and the specific game rules are limited to the post having some clear connection to what went before (best to quote the relevant) while being as far off the subject of that post as it is possible to imagine. Any mileage in it?

Rules again

As far removed from the subject of the previous post as possible

Radio Times for week commencing 25th Nov flopped onto the map yesterday, On leafing through it I found a brief piece on the future of robot sex toys, illustrated with a grinning loon sitting next to a full size Barbie. Apparently there is thought to be a prospect of such an item becoming readily available within a decade (the robot sex toy, not the other which is ubiquitous in all places) and there was much handwringing over the consequences for males attracted by the prospect of an ever available 'girl' with no opinions.

Call me weird, but would this work? Where's the entertainment without 'Where did I put my car keys?', 'Oh , I've dropped the flour tub!', 'I didn't put the plug in and all the hot water has gone' and the thousand and one other divertissments (which I am convinced they dream up for our enjoyment) which must be known to all who cohabit with one or more females. And she won't take herself off to the bathroom for a wash either....

Is the thread on Ships more likely to drift than other threads?

So when exactly did you happen to mention 4 foot 8 and a 1/2, for the first time, to your future spouse?

I'm not sure when I did but I distinctly remember asking mine how far apart the rails looked, (when we were waiting for a train together), as a way of broaching/sounding her out about railways.

(I must have been very subtle because we continued to see each other.)

Mrs SE accompanied me on a number of railway trips before we were married. I think she was impressed by the regularity I found a declassified Mk1 FK on late night trips back home.

My wife doesn't go anywhere with me if it's railway related.

She hasn't even been in my shed. Although I have invited her on more than one occasion.

I think she doubts my intentions. I think she knows too much.

We have a shed. It has garden stuff in it so Mrs 96701 is in and out of it all the time.

Speaking of sheds, a ball python takes about 2 weeks to shed its skin.

Are you American? - over here we usually call them ‘Royal’ Pythons. Presumably from their Linnaean name ‘Python Regius’

Oh wow! was that a diagram 116? Were the orange curtains still in place? Steam or electric heat?

The very thing, used to be a lot on the Euston-Birmingham-Manchester/Liverpool sets. Big springy cushions and fat armrests, although the latter didn't stay down for very long. Curtains, door blinds  and a dimmer switch for the lights. Tickets checked straight out of Euston and no disturbance before Coventry.  :friends:

How very civilised. Being sent to Coventry without being disturbed.

Over the last couple of weeks I've watched both Humans and Westworld, both based on the idea of robots so lifelike that they can be used as sex toys. Setting aside any entertainment value, I found Humans the more likely of the two: it didn't assume that every real human was as wantonly violent as in Westworld (a very 1970s cultural position, betraying its origins), whereas the likely profoundly unsatisfactory nature of robotic couplings was, er, laid bare ("I optimised the angle of entry to maximise your pleasure...").

Nonetheless, we know that sex sells. Consumer innovations from video players to live streaming have been built on the sex-related market (Microsoft's pioneering work on live streaming was, in public, presented as being all about educational opportunities, but I understand internally the business case was driven by the porn industry).

We should not be surprised. How many of us find our favourite locos to be "sexy"? Yes, that is how I feel about a Clayton.

My great Uncle's brother used to work for Clayton. His job was to insert the throstle grommet in to the crankarm distributor. Got an MBE too for services to the industry....

The US tv series “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” of blessed memory included a weekly drift. As they were preparing to sign off, a propos of nothing, Dick Martin would say “I’d like to tell you something my Uncle Willard used to say...” but we never heard the full, story.
