Kings Cross New Approach Layout

Recommended Posts

I find it disappointing that, at least 2,000 years after H0m0 sapiens got used to the concept of zero, people still find it irksome.  (The Scottish Covid Protection Levels system starts at Level 0 and no-one seems to have a problem with that.)

ISTR that there has been a previous discussion on this forum about stations that have, or have had, a platform 0.

EDIT: Apparently RMWeb takes umbrage at the use of the name of the genus within which anatomically modern humans are classified.

Shouldn't that be 9 car Crossrail trains?

Up until the Liverpool St. platforms were lengthened, TfL had to run the 345's in a temporary 7 car configuration.

They're all 9 car trains  now.

.

 Yup, my mistake.

Starting at 1 is the normal arrangement, and as such it appears neater. But once everyone is used to platform 0 being where it is (and also all the others which would be changed in a renumbering), changing it for the sake of neatness is probably more effort than it's worth.

Renumbering somewhere like Birmingham Moor St would have been a more worthwhile exercise, as IIRC it used to go (from East to West) 2, 1, 3, 4. Seems to have been resolved now though.

Can the average passenger cope with negative platform numbers if we ever need to add another platform ?

Only JK Rowling can deliver any new platforms now - it's all built up around the west of the station and they are as far east they can go too without using the curve again.

At most they can reinstate the platform they've just detracked.

Have heard it said that some passengers unfamiliar with the modern King's Cross have been confused by the display of "Platform 0" on the departure screens etc., taking it as an indication that a platform has not yet been allocated!
