Short Mail Trains

Recommended Posts

As Im looking to run 4 coach mail trains on my layout, Im looking for prototypical formations of coaching stock. from the 1990's to the cessation of RES

Does anyone have that sort of info, or know of where I can investigate train formations please?

Thanks

Trev :)

Well, in the later RES period they tended to use the formation of PCV/SUPER GUV/SUPER GUV/PCV so I guess you could use a formation like that, although I think they generally ran two or more of these together in a single train. There's also this picture of a 47 with just two TPO coaches.

Try looking at the formations that arrived at Plymouth during this time. From memory they were not very long.

For example from the RES working book dated summer 2002

1C06 13,53 Plymouth - Bristol Parkway

Loco, NAA, NKA, NKA, NAA

1M65 19.15 Plymouth - Willesden

Loco, NAA, NKA, NKA, NAA

And elsewhere

1M29 19.52 Norwich - Willesden

Loco NBA, NKA, NKA, NBA

Dover - Willesden in the 90's - couple of TPO vehicles & BG - berthed in Ashford Down Yard during the day - ran down to Dover Priory in the early evening and then back to Willesden via Canterbury West ........................................ Vehicles went to & from Wembley RM depot ISTR - always a Class 73

1EO1 Workington-Whitehaven-Huddersfield TPO normally ran with one POS and two or three BG:

A little earlier than your period, but in 1985 there was a Crewe-Cardiff and return working which was made up of BSK+BCK+POS+POS with between one and ten GUVs added depending on direction and day of week.

As far as I'm aware, RES (by then under EWS ownership) "streamlined" their operations once the Princess Royal Distribution Centre hub came into usage, with the outlying collection points at Cheltenham, Doncaster, Norwich amongst others. As the above posts have hinted, their default rakes were of a pair of super BG's (or Propelling Control Vehicles at Carlisle for instance) bookending a pair of super GUV's. Multiple rakes of four being picked up en route to the London PRDC.

Before this time, practically anything goes!
