Modern generic switching railroads - How generic can I be?

Some photos from Facebook: the layout is still under construction, but if it operates as well as it looks, it must already be a stunner.

I love the way that exit stage left is disguised with nothing more than greenery.

No, but you have seen everything I have seen!

To which I can add the following:

I apply static grass of different sizes (Mini Natur : 2mm, 4mm, 6mm).

Trees and bushes are made from Zeeschuim (Seafoam = Supertree), painted in dark green and cut in different sizes. Foliage from a mix of flakes (Heki), leaves (Noch, Polak) and static grass (Mini Natur).

To simulate weeds, I apply white glue on the top of few grass, and sprinkle some flakes. Same way for the flowers.

Finally, I apply a light mix of white glue and water with an airbrush (1 bar max) to fix all leaves, flakes and "flowers".

The auger is scratch built:

Evergreen 224 for the "tube"

Evergreen 220 for the A frame

Evergreen 262 to simulate the drive line

Evergreen 261 added under the tube to connect the A frame

Other parts are made from styrene strips & sheets (Electrical motor, chain box, ...)

Track is Peco “83 Line”, painted as follows:

- Humbrol light grey applied both on rails and wooden ties (airbrush)

- Mix of Humbrol 29 & 62 on rails (40/60, airbrush)

- Once dry, washes with a mix of Vallejo 70822 & 70886

- Drybrush with oil (light grey, or a mix of white & black) on wooden ties

New England street running using an early CF7, to please Jordan, but also to show that it doesn’t have to be grassy. In fact, you could simply model the street and a runout, moving the tank cars from one off scene road to another, and having the loco coming back on its own.

I have made some revision to the plan, I seem to be settling more on a city theme:

I'd consider making the cross street at the left an overpass and angling it so it's on a diagonal going right as it goes to the black drop. This would cut off the sight line into the staging/lead track.

Dr Quinn sent me this link yesterday, as I'm planning a Paper Mill on a 3-2-2 (+1 road) Inglenook....:

298, that is good you are building a Inglenook layout off of a paper mill from the Washington Northern Railroad layout. The WN is one of my favorite bedroom-sized layouts that Model Railroader has featured.

Do your self a favor, and check out this industrial park in Greensboro North Carolina! Could be scaled down to 9' to 10'. I was inches away from modeling it because Norfolk southern uses 6 axle power to switch it!!

Here’s a track plan I drew up, switch for switch just like the real thing. it's 16' long by this track plan, but like I said, you could get rid of a siding or two to fit your space.

I was just about to go by the wood to start making the bench work when I had a change of heart for something closer to home.

I have been doing a little more revision to my plan:

39562831465_7f6bea78ae_b.jpg

The bottom spur would be for transloading and car storage. I think I will loose the building in the top right and that would become a lumber yard so I can use all my center beam flats.

Just another idea to add to the pot.

Remember I am not having staging, so everything is staged on the layout.

Looks like a winner to me! Solid plan.

Now don’t double guess yourself. if you like it, Then build it, And don’t look back!!
