Canterbury Road (Mk2)

Thank you for sharing those pictures @SouthernBlue80s. Brought back some good memories.

I didn't get the opportunity to go up into the box at Faversham. That was a nice thing to experience. I managed to get the signal box diagrams for the original A and B signal boxes from the NRM a few years ago that the power box replaced as part of the Kent Coast Resignalling/ electrification in the late 50's.

Nice to see again the old MPD and Wagon Repair shed still visible, and the Goods Yard ground frame building. I have built models of those shown in earlier posts on this thread. I'll be able to use the ground frame building, but the Wagon Repair shed is too big for the space I have.

My first design on BR was for the crossover road beneath the back wagons in the third photo. I still have my drawing. I think the head of the pway office thought it was a good thing to give the new starter a job where I lived.

Thanks again.

I am glad you like the pictures, I wish I had a few more. Looking at them I had forgotten how non overgrown and intact looking the old MPD and repair shed were back then.

I just found your pictures of the wagon repair shed. Very nicely done.

I would like to build a model of Faversham but I have no room for that.

Also I see Mike Storey contributed to this thread, as he was involved in the area with BR. I was sad to see he passed away fairly recently. RIP.

Cheers

Steve

Me neither! I did start to plot it out and I figured I would have just enough room for the MPD and Wagon Repair shed, but not a fiddle yard, and no real scenic breaks in real life until you get to Preston footbridge.

I did work out how long the full layout would need to be, but scenic breaks, particularly at the west end would have to be contrived as there is no overbridge until you get to St Ann's crossing, so some 'fiction' would need to take place. Possibly with Forbes Road going over, rather than under.

The east end isn't much better. Although the Long Bridge would be ideal, it would lose a lot of the goods yard and the wagon repair shed.

Then the options would either have to be bringing the Ramsgate, Dover and London lines round into a fiddle yard in the style of Heaton Lodge, or have a fiddle yard at the London end and loop the Ramsgate lines back round to join the Dover lines. . . . . Options, options. . . . ..

Yes he did. I didn't know Mike, but it is always sad when someone passes away.

I had a green Traing 31 freight train set one Christmas

I didn't get the set, but I did receive a Class 31 for either Christmas or birthday. Still in the Cupboard of Happiness awaiting a full service. One of the locos and items of rolling stock that is the reason why the upper level is Code 100 and the lower-level Code 75. I will be able to invoke Rule 1 and 1960's/ 1970's Christmas and birthday presents will roll by and I'll be able to lift a glass to my Dad. 🥳

ps Not sure how many Class 31's would have been seen on BR(S) in east Kent.

pps much more Grandchildren friendly compared to modern stock with fragile details.

As all the layouts I follow and get inspired by currently are all GW based (Aston, Chuffnell, Warren, Little Muddle) I thought I shouldn't pass up the opportunity to give a little pleasure back.

Well, a couple more hours applying paint to the dockside wall and I've got to here. I think I should have primed the wall like I did the dock base.

The wall is 52mm (13ft) above 'water' level.

A bit more time this evening has got me to here, with the final picture a 'shade comparison' to the prototype I'm hoping to emulate.

I'm going to try the toilet paper method for the dock water, which I've been considering for a while. Interestingly that is mentioned in the Redbridge Wharf article in the January 2023 BRM.

Should have added the link Toilet paper + Glue = Realistic Ocean water - YouTube

Not looking for waves though as it is a dock, so just some ripples will do. Will see how I get on.

Well, I've got to here following the instructions on the video link above. I waited about 1.5 hours and then pressed the three lighters into the surface. I thought that gave enough time to provide some stiffness to the PVA/water/paper mix, but which would still be wet enough not to stick to the bottom of the craft. My fear that I would rip the surface up lifting the lighters back out proved unfounded. There are now three flat areas where the lighters will sit.

Hopefully when all is dry and painted the waterline of each will be just below my impression of a rippled surface being disturbed by the wind.  Some close ups at or just above water level.

Just noticed the lighter colour on the lower part of the dock wall in the second picture in the last post. The pva/ water mix did get dabbed on there during the process. Hopefully I've not rubbed it off.

Can't check at the moment as we are away. Had to do an emergency overnight babysit for granddaughter last night as grandson was taken to hospital with symptoms of Strep A. Awaiting diagnosis.

Good news. Grandson does not have Strep A, but a 'viral infection' with similar symptoms.

All parents, children and grandparents home safe (after a long night for parents and grandson in A&E and icy trips for everyone).

Checked the dock wall and its back to its original colour 🙂

The water is still drying (odd sentence that).

The outline of the three Lighter hulls, where they will sit below water level, are visible now. Next job will be trying to make the water look like. . . . . water.

I can feel some shunting coming on. Sadly, Grandchildren's visit delayed due to hospital visit reported above. They will come overnight and do some shunting with Grandad after school breaks up now.

  • 2 weeks later...

A bit of Boxing Day wiring of the descent to the lower level yard, the yard tracks and the Reception sidings on Board 3.

D Connectors off to Boards 2 and 4. Board 4 had some wiring done pre-Christmas.

If only I'd gone DCC, I'd only need two wires. *

*Allegedly 😂

I've had my head under the Dock board  (Board 1) figuring out the section wiring that I did several years ago. There is an overlapping section between Yard and Dock which appears on both control panel sketches that had me scratching my head (the head that drew the sketches and drilled the holes in the main panel).

I have figured it out 👍. It was quite straight forward. I've updated the wiring diagram I sketched out at the time, but clearly didn't finish. . . . .

Note to self: get a proper wiring diagram done for future reference.

It’s just so easy to leave ‘til later’ and when ‘later’ comes it’s not at all obvious.

I know I’m guilty of not updating all my allocation listings and I have various versions of ‘the truth’.

Paul.

Spaghetti Bolognaise for dinner this evening. Reminds me of something I've been doing this afternoon. . . . .

All the two way switches now wired up and tested for the various Yards and the descent from the main lines as far as the solder tags. Next job is to wire from the LH solder tags through the inter board connectors to the various sections.
