RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted May 22, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 22, 2018 Is there a definitive list of continental rolling stock that was in the UK at the time of Dunkirk? I am aware of some French stock that was used on some military railways but was there any other stock put to use elseware. Also apart from the French stock was stock from other countries trapped in the UK.
jwealleans
There is a list of ferry wagons from October 1939 which someone sent me a copy of some time ago. I've also seen a picture in 'Southern Way' of some out of gauge wagons which had been stopped at Dover and then trapped when war broke out. Some French vans were converted to generator wagons (I have a photo) and I've read about German vans being made into dormitory vehicles for armoured trains. Britain and Hungary were in dispute until 1956 about a Sturgeon van which was impounded (by us) in 1939 and never returned.
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted May 22, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 22, 2018 Thank you. The French wagons that were out of gauge are probably those that ended up at Bicester and Longmoor.
