And is entirely down to inadequate negotiation or understanding between organisers and local authority. I wouldn’t want to be responsible for that - but I am not inviting layout owners to exhibit in good faith, either.

I can imagine where some of those parking tickets might be shoved, and suspect the organiser has alienated some of the very clubs he is purporting to represent and support.

Old - as it seems you are determined to be negative about the whole thing may I suggest you ask before stating we were inadequate at the organisation of the show.

As a matter of fact the local council were also approached for discounted parking, which the venue assured was available, however along with everything else related to Paignton council the request was turned down.

For your information the association will look after the clubs effected by parking fines, as they do with every exhibition.

I must admit having read some of the comments I do question the point of trying to organise an exhibition.

Captain - Yes it is

Just to clear up a few comments, The Wessex Association of Model Clubs is not a Club in its own right, more a support network for lots of smaller clubs to help with running and setting up exhibitions - so please do support your local clubs. I am purely adding this as a exhibitor as I would like to see you all there.

Cheers Chris

So, in your early post you are “purely adding this as an exhibitor”, but now you seem to be closely involved with organising the event.

I am not negative about the exhibition per se. As I noted in my comment a week ago, I felt there were some very worthy layouts, but they and the specialist suppliers were rather overwhelmed by the acres of sales tables. And more visitors would have improved everyone’s day. Some hints about the domestics - where to get tea and buns, where to find the loo - on the leaflet supplied would have helped.

If exhibitors were challenged, let alone penalised, by parking restrictions, how can you consider the organisation to be adequate?

Sorry that you guys were so disappointed with the exhibition, it’s our first time trying this in Paignton. I was opposite Wiggoforgold with my own small layout - attendance has been low. Unfortunately Paignton Council removed all of our signs as the prohibit advertising outside which we were unaware of.

To help us could I ask what you look for in a exhibition?

Better advertising in the magazines and less traders it looks like a swapmeet with a couple of layouts thrown in

Old - our club is a member of the association and since being part of the exhibition we have offered to have a more involved part in the show as I would like to see a good exhibition down here

However knowing how hard the two guys who organised the show worked I do find the negativity within the hobby quite shocking,

There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism and advice, however moaning helps no one. If you want a good show near home then say what was wrong and recommend what you would like to see instead.

Many years ago when I lived in Plymouth, there was a distinct lack of train shows.  They were mainly in the Guildhall in those days but few and far between so with any train show in Plymouth these days, I watch with interest from afar mainly to see how they fare in the toy train world of today.
