JeremyC
I am starting to build a 7mm scale model of a Thompson Semi Lavatory Composite from an Ian Kirk Kit. I want to replace the plastic trussing supplied for the underframe with brass angle and need to know the angle iron size used. The only drawing I have is the one in Harris's Gresley coaches [which claims to be for a Gresley, but I think is actually for a Thompson], but this is not well reproduced. I think the drawing shows the size as 3 1/2" x 3 1/2". Can anyone confirm this? Thanks Jeremy.
34theletterbetweenB&D
The original 'Pictorial record of LNER wagons' by Peter Tatlow solved this question for me on publication in 1976. I too had no dimensioned drawing for the coach underframes, but this book had the 52' over headstocks Quint D drawing, and the angle iron trussing shown as 4 x 3.5". Compare with coach photographs at equivalent size and the truss angle iron dimensions are visually identical. Something very apparent in many photos of both wagons and coaches is that the 4" is vertical on the truss members, the queen posts looking slightly thinner, so these have the 3.5" face outward. brossard
Tatlow's Historical Carriage Drawings of the LNER and it's constituents is a useful book. I got the combined LMS and LNER volume. For my coaches I got the Isinglass drawings which are to scale and provide useful info in the notes. My thread on building Kirk 52' 6" Gresley corridor coaches is here: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/116068-ian-kirk-7mm-gresley-52-6-corridor-coaches/ I actually finished the full brake and did as you say - replaced the trussing with brass angle (K&S 1/16" #815003). My treatment of the underframe may be of interest. (Page 3) I used JLTRT castings, bought just before they folded. I got a wealth of information from the downloadable kit instructions for Kemilway coach kits. https://www.kemilway.com/kemilway.html You can get these by clicking on "Kemilway Manual", make sure you have lots of ink in your printer, the instructions go on forever.
