This arrived in the post this morning. Picked up for a song on ebay. Far East Distributors Baldwin Mogul. Listed as a non runner. The gears in the loco seem smooth enough, so maybe an issue with the motor. Anyway, challenge accepted.

This will probably become RGS #11. If I can get it to run, it will be a challenge to get sound in it, but I don't think DCC would be a problem, using a Lenz Gold mini.

Won this on ebay this evening. It need a new shaft from tender to loco, but otherwise a runner.

Should be plenty of room for sound fitting in the tender. Lacks valve gear, but painting and weathering should disguise it a bit.

Stripped the mogul down and find it is a runner, albeit very noisy, well the motor is. Big open frame jobbie. Don't know how the seller tested it, but as is usual with brass, tender pick up one side, loco the other and one of the bogies was the wrong way around. Quick rotation of one and it was sorted. Motor fills almost the whole of the tender, so I'll be sourcing a new motor at the Slim Gauge meet in Rugby in a couple of weeks.

SP#18 should be with me in a day or so, so can get that sorted at the same time.

Just came across this shot. Look at the state of those ties!

Totally unrealistic for this kind of heavyweight line 🤣

Narrow gauge they may be, but the all up weight of a K-27 is 111.5 tons.

Her is the future #18

441052224_10163821073734012_4300746070379451161_n.jpg.7315a3e12e3c09538180a84fad28c20c.jpg

Looking at the wheels, it doesn't look like it has ever been run. Certainly never been lubricated, it was bone dry and tight. Used sewing machine oil on all the bearings and now it all rotates easily with twisting the shaft drive with my fingers. It needs a new shaft from the tender and I have yet to look inside it. Not sure about the raised SP lettering on the tender, I picked up a sheet of Microscale decals on ebay with small SPs and hope they are the same size.

The actual #18 was preserved in 1954 and sister #9 ran the last SP steam narrow gauge service in 1959. sadly I missed it on my trip on the Durango & Silverton, as it was in the works for repairs after blowing a piston ring 4 weeks before I got there.

Why a Southern Pacific loco on a mainly D&RGW/RGS layout. Well, in my world, it exists in that mythical place where many of the 3ft lines joined up. So now thinking about C&S for the mogul.

I was so excited to receive my SP ten wheeler, that I forgot the bonus pictures.

So here they are.

The mogul has been stripped and repainted.

As for the SP ten wheeler, I discovered that the reason for lack of valve gear, is that it is  either 8 or 9 and not 18.

Enjoyable trip the the Slim Gauge meet in Rugby. Picked up a couple of 34' PSC stock cars and, yet another, caboose. Gifted a motor for the Mogul and some advice on that and the on the SP 4-6-0. I now know it's #9, different footplates, and have arranged to get lighting and sound fitted once it's painted.

New motor for #9, plus drive coupling for it and the Mogul ordered from North West Shortline. And a load of parts from Precision Scale for the Mogul and other projects. #9 and the Mogul are in the paint shop at the moment, the later will be waiting for the PSC parts before this will be complete, as part of it's upgrade, it will have a new pilot. Once it is running, a backhead will be installed. Backheads have also been ordered for the C-25, K-28 and #9.

#9 painted. New motor and drive coupling on the way from NWSL. Waiting on the invoice from PSC for the parts I have ordered, including new wheels for the front truck.

Very nice, You could blacken the brass rods as well to remove the gold look without gumming them up. A small pot of brass black isn’t expensive and useful for lots of stuff over time.

Next thing to do Paul. So far I have done next to no work on the chassis. Just had and paid my PSC invoice, but not expecting great things from USPS with the delivery. saying that though, my last order from Fos Scale only took 4 days from despatch.

During covid, I picked up one of these cheaply on ebay.

4-4.jpg.efdf9d74e055877d1426838dbeb1727c.jpg

The plan was to use the chassis to power this.

20240515_154858.jpg.5e9a44ee3c86168a889b938c8a2bcb7b.jpg

It failed, due to the wheelbase being too short, it just didn't look right. So in the end, it was sold back through ebay and at a profit. A couple of weeks ago, the layout was featured in our in house e-magazine, Bristol Temple Reads. This resulted in an acquaintance offering me this. It is/was quite tatty, with parts missing and a damaged pantograph, I think it had been dropped at some stage of it's life. and as he only wanted £20 for it, so I thought it was worth a punt. The body has now been painted.

20240515_160144.jpg.b7b55c2fda6df2fc059f193f1fcde55f.jpg

The roof is awaiting parts from PSC. The area of the pantographs has been boxed over and, when they arrive, will have fan housings fitted. The number was chosen simple because a, it was higher than the steam numbers and b, it was the only sequence of number in that range that I had four sets in black and of the right size. If you look closely, you can see I had to use white on the ends.

The purists will probably faint at seeing this, but at the end of the day, this hobby is supposed to be fun.

Do you put much on eBay?  Could we ask what your seller name is, out of interest?  Keith.

Very rare Keith. But I will be selling off some of my 00 stuff in the coming months and some of my surplus H0 buildings.

These include a two pack of Walthers Company houses, a City Street Models Company house, Classic Miniatures 'Red Light District' (a set of 5 miners cabins, a wood & card kit) A Model Power Brewery and a Bachmann Community Hall. If any interest you, make me an offer, however silly as it will save me listing them.

Thanks @JZ, we’ve started packing up ready to move house next month, and even more building kits are the last thing I ought to be buying at the moment, tempting though this list may be.  Thanks, Keith.

Good luck with the move. Moving locally, or completely upping sticks?

Thanks for asking - we're just moving to the next street (I'm not changing jobs).  We need an accessible property with good disabled access, which our current Victorian home can't provide.  It does mean downsizing, and the story of how this impacts my modelling is unfolding in an RMweb blog here and currently linked in my signature.  I won't be starting the layout of a lifetime any time soon - but as always have plenty of ideas for projects to explore, Keith.

Another cheap Bemo from ebay.

20240516_100730_resized.jpg.b6634e1ca74dd69e7bb7daa4264c39ce.jpg

Seems to be a good runner, but only tested with a 9V battery against the wheels. So, regauge, repaint and add wasp stripes front and rear below footplate level. Will add plows (oh, so I hate spelling in this simplistic way) Unfortunately the ones I ordered from PSC were out of stock, so I have had to order some Hornby/Rivarossi ones for this and the other Bemo.

Picked up at the Slim Gauge meet, was this caboose.

20240516_103510.jpg.453d2dbda0860b7e3393dcf47e608155.jpg

It came in pale green, which I wasn't too keen on, so I have just given it a coat of JNR Green. It appears to be a 3D print and heaven only knows how it was put together. I had to use liquid mask on the windows. It was only £3 and came with a pair of Grandt Line truck, which was a bargain just for those. Decided on this green to be the house color (no, can't do it) colour for the fictional Monticello & East Utah Railway. This runs from Monticello, Utah to a junction with the RGS at Dolores and then on to Durango and Northwest to a junction with the Rio Grande at Ridgway. Mostly worked by the Rio Grande, they did have a couple of loco's, a clapped out 2-6-0 and later, as mining developed a second hand B-B diesel hydraulic. Farming, ranching, vanadium and uranium mining have all played an important role in the economy and history of Monticello. I still have a few Rail-Line boxcars and a couple of gons to build, and these will be done in this green.
