d00m
How to cut off moulded hand rails. In the past I have always done this as a complete rebuild. Now I have to be really careful, (not damaging 'next to' paintwork), Is it a scalpel ? I ask because there should be a quicker way...
Jeff Smith
Presumably plastic not die-cast metal. A plastic modellers chisel as avail at good tool sites is the safest way. These can usually also be used on white metal. There was another thread about this topic recently with references.

Butler Henderson
Doing a series of V nicks can help as it minimises the length of any horizontal cut.
peak experience
i find turning the chisel 'upside down' helps to minimise making deep nicks and holes in the surrounding plastic. often times a handrail can be removed in one pass with minimal, if any, need for sanding or filling.
Malcolm 0-6-0
When I've done it I first drilled small holes where the handrail knobs were which made positioning their replacements a little easier once I'd carved away the raised detail. 1
