Enfys_Rainbow
Hi all, Thought I'd share a project that I'm working on at the moment here. Talerddig signal box was constructed in 1874 as one of the first Cambrian Railway boxes. It remained in service until 1988 when it was demolished but rebuilt, albeit slightly differently, alongside the A470. https://www.flickr.com/photos/47422047@N07/33211624095 https://www.flickr.com/photos/63164772@N05/9629659088 It's from seeing the rebuilt box on my many journeys to and from S Wales that really sparked my interest in the box. My model is not going to be a completely faithful representation, but is going to be closely based on the prototype. Here's my progress so far: Construction is from 1mm plastic sheet clad in SE Finecast embossed brick sheets. The upper windows will be where I deviate mainly as I will not be representing the style of the original windows. Thanks for looking E_R
Enfys_Rainbow
Bit of progress: My decision to use bigger windows has meant that the relationship between the box and hut is slightly out. I still think it captures the look of the original though so I'm pressing on! E_R

Nick Holliday
Nice modelling. Just a small observation, but, at least in the good old days, slaters would avoid using cut slates at the end of rows, instead using a larger slate (perhaps one and a half width) to ensure they had enough room to get at least two pins in safely. Given its location, good quality slates would have been easily sourced. 1
Enfys_Rainbow
Hi Nick Thanks for your comment. When building the model, I looked at the photo in the following thread (last photo on page 2) which shows cut slates on the roof. https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/79470-5050s-eclectic-photo-mix/page/2/ E_R

If there's a good photo and it suits your period/requirements, then it's best to replicate as it is, rather than what it may have looked like when built. It's good to see individaully applied slates, too, which allow you to get things just right.
petejones
Great work so far! I'm going to attempt to scratch build a signal box soon too, so will be watching your progress with interest.

I've never actually scratchbuilt a signal box before either so I'm learning as I go. Some fiddling with windows tonight and the addition of a corrugated roof (all held together with masking tape!) Enfys_Rainbow
Hi all, This project stalled badly - I just can't face making the windows individually at the moment, or at any point in the last 12 months! I did start kitbashing the classic Wills signal box kit into something slightly different, progress below...
