Elbow Lane. Having a rest while I build board 4.

Been a bit quiet for a few days while I paid a visit to the Basingstoke show and progressed other projects.

I needed to move things on and get more done to the track level details.

The hardstanding at the rear has been started using the lightweight filler. It's odd stuff in that it's not very 'sticky' when fresh. However, mixing in a drop or two of water makes it a different beast altogether. Much smoother and easier to put a finish on it. The fact that it never really goes that hard can be used to advantage. Leave it for a day then begin smoothing out any undulations with whatever tool you find best. Don't bother the try to sand it. It's too soft and just rolls into tiny balls.

Two on the shots show the use of an old blunt knife. This was pushed along tight against the edges of the rails whilst pressing down hard. This takes the filler about half a mm below the surface of the rail allowing it to be cleaned properly and not obstruct wheels.

Update.

I've been struggling to decide how to finish the Loco stub at the front. I've decided to have a 'grill' on the nearside and in the centre but have a planked walkway on the far side.

I will be using Scale Model Scenery Walkway/Grating but this needed support to bring it up near rail level along with the planking. Here are a few shots of the progress so far.

More later.

Over the last couple of days I have managed to do the following:

Stain the wooden walkway,

Paint the support area for the Grating in mat black,

paint the grates in silver

&

finally, fix down the grating.

Dave.

I have now turned my attention back to the derelict platform.

As this is at the rear of the layout, it needs finishing off a bit more before I move to the centre and front.

Also painted the trackplan on the control panel.

Now weathering down the platform surface (coated with wet & dry paper) using talcum powder and then brushing away area to represent where staff have walked.

Should smell good if the layout gets invited to shows.

So. I have the Smell Good factor, Ballast soaked in IPA I can lick when bored and now thinking or representing rust with Marmite.

Mmmmmmm

So people will either love or hate your layout?

The lamp looks rather bright green, especially in the last photo. It could be just how the camera sees it, but I would have thought a darker green would look better.

Here's a lamp I photographed in the 1970's, although not the same type, and I only had an Instamatic camera and cheap colour slide film:

Thanks for that.

It's odd what you can miss.

In the process of rectifying though.

Cheers

Lately I have been considering exactly to put by the Loco Road and the rear hard standing.

With the lack of some Knightwing piping I decided to have a go myself.

First is the drains from the loco road where there will be a fueling point.

Next is something for the hard standing area.

Moral is: never throw away the spues from locos and kits.
