Hi All,

I managed to pickup a secondhand GWR livery 56xx class 0-6-2T the other day, which was it good condition, and nice and cheap, but came without a motor.

I've been browsing round for a couple of days, trying to locate a replacement, and can't find one anywhere (yet)

Can anyone suggest a suitable replacement motor, or a supplier I can request one from?

I'm in Brisbane, Australia, but will order from the UK if necessary.

Thanks for any assistance.

The easiest way is to contact Bachmann directly.

I had an ex-LMS Jubilee which needed a motor, and Bachmann were able to supply without problem.

They always seem to have adequate spares, inclusive of motors, cradles, idler gears.

There are other motors which may suit, but it's one of those 'specialist art' things - slightly out and it'll never work.

May seem steep, but that's likely what you will pay wherever you look. Further problem is that you need the worm as well as the motor, and it's a Kader design 'fat' worm. I don't know of a kit part equivalent.

The alternative motor that will fit if you can find one is the Mashima 1426, 2mm shaft diameter. Searching for that or whatever dimensional equivalent is now available will serve as a price comparison for the motor alone.

£23.50 if that includes postage it is a reasonable price.

You wont get a Mashima for under £20 plus postage. The only other way if if a wreck comes up on ebay ,which wont be much cheaper with postage, and no guarantee that the motor still works for any length of time.

Must admit, the pricing is quite fair.

I've tried converting to Mashima in the past, and have found their motors excellent, but at least £20, before postage.

If the postage is a major contributor, I would consider which other parts may be required - cradle, gears, etc - and add them 'to the list'.

Loco will be raring to go for another 10+ years!!

I'm assuming that the locomotive came without a motor, or any other 'bits' to make it work. If so, the postage will work out fairly well, as you're more or less guaranteed to have the exact parts, and the exact fit.  I bought a model just ;like this (sans motor) last year. One call to Bachmann, and job done. The previous owner fitted the wires back to front to the pickups, so Grrrr! One dab of the soldering iron, and it now runs very well.

One excellent thing about Bachmann, is that once upon a time, they sent me some wrong wheels for an 04 diesel model. One phone call, and the right parts arrived to re-supply the original incorrect parts, and all FoC. No connection, but a very happy customer.

Sorry and I know it’s not what you want to hear, but new Mashimas are increasingly rare and second hand prices reflect this!  I think your best bet is to stump up what Bachmann are asking.  This is why the loco was cheap in the first place; there’s no such thing as a free lunch.  You are paying an unfair postage penalty for living in Oz, which makes things worse.

Caveat Emptor!
