Testing decoder

Is there any way of testing a decoder (not fitted) ?

A decoder tester with the various sockets is the easiest way to check decoders - such as the ESU 53900.

 

It's not unknown for folks to build their own with various sockets, connected to a motor and LEDs.

 

Before I bought a tester, I used a spare chassis that had a 21 pin socket and connected a 21-8 adapter when I wanted to test 8 pin decoders.

 

What type of decoder is it?

I don't know but it was fitted in a Hornby loco. It didn't work so I removed it to run the loco without.

Can a faulty decoder be repaired?

MERG (www.merg,org,uk) sell a decoder tester (PMP14) for an 8 pin decoder but you have to join MERG and make up the kit.

Not economically, cheaper to replace.  Basic LAIS decoders cost less than £10 and higher end Zimo from £20.

Ok thanks for your info. I take it the cheaper decoders are you get what you pay for.

What is a good value for money decoder?
