Which class DMU?

Apologies in advance if this is not the best place to post...

In the early/mid 80s, I would catch a DMU from Manchester Oxford Road. Definitely blue livery!

Where would I be able to find out which class these would’ve been?

Several classes ran in that area.  The ubiquitous Metro-Cammell class 101,  the "Calder Valley" class 110 and BRCW class 104 all come to mind.

There are suitable models.

 

There are RTR models of the 101 and 108 from Bachmann, and Hornby used to do the 110 Calder Valleys. which should be attainable via the unspeakable auction site.  AFAIK nobody does the 104s (though Triang did them back in the Silurian Era in TT), which is a pity because they were widespread throughout the North of England and the Midlands.  There are enough differences to make it a very faffy job to convert them from 110s.

Allerton had a small number of class 115 units allocated for trains over the former CLC route via Warrington Central.

No doubt Trans-Pennine class 124s would have been diverted during engineering works. The class 110s would 

probably be used if they`d been pinched by Allerton or Longsight depots, who normally provided units for former 

CLC services. Newton Heath and Chester sets could also be used throughout south Manchester. Buxton units also worked services to Irlam and Warrington.

Hi Dave,

 

The Chester based Park Royal 103's used to appear in the Manchester area usually Piccadilly but they would be borrowed round and about on other turns. I used to see them on the Wigan to Southport line every now and again.

Hornby also did a reasonable job of the 101.  Not as refined as Bachmann but not as pricey either.  Both turn up from time to time around the auction sites and retailer's second-hand departments.

The 101 was the ex Lima model, with better paint finish and new quieter drive unit.
