Damo666
As I'm trying to budget my spending and stretch it out a little, I'm curious if anyone can shed some light on the timeframe for retailer discounts on new products? There are a couple of new purchases I'd like to make, but as late as possible. Many retailers offer a discount on new products for a period of time after release. Any idea how long this tends to be? If there is factual data that would be excellent, otherwise past experience would be helpful.
Philou
If I knew the answer to that I'd be snowed under a huuuuuuge amount of stock. How long is a piece of string? There are no doubt many many factors in play - stock that doesn't shift - wrong colour, wrong region, just not a popular choice, too expensive. Some shops don't discount - perhaps they haven't over-bought their stock. There is also an embargo by the big manufacturers too, restricting the time before discounting can begin to give the smaller shops a chance to sell some stock before the 'box-shifters' start down-pricing. I'm sure someone will be along in a moment with more information. Cheers, Philip
RMweb Premium phil-b259 Posted June 3, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 3, 2020 IIRC Bachmann have a policy of not supplying retailers who provide discounts of more than 20% of RRP in the first 3 months to help support smaller retailers who cannot afford to discount as heavily as the large 'box shifters'

Hi, We are a retailer and this is what the manufactures have in place regarding discounting, the maximum discount allowed for new releases: Hornby 10% for the first 6 weeks of a new release Bachmann/Dapol/Heljan 15% for the first 8 weeks of a new release. Oxford, Peco, Metcalfe etc have no discount limits (at the moment) so it is up to the retailer what they choose to discount. After this period of time has passed a retailer can discount more if they wish. Of course a retailer does not have to discount anything off the RRP if they do not wish too. Hope this helps 1 1
